Default BHARAT HAS THE WORLD'S MOST LUXURIOUS TRAIN

India has the world's most luxurious train

By Viju B
The Hindustan Times
Thursday, January 15, 2004

Mumbai, January 14 - Luxury on rails
is not new to Indian Railways, but
this one is being billed as the most
expensive and plush train yet on its
tracks.

After flag-off by Prime Minister Atal
Bihari Vajpayee on January 16, Deccan
Odyssey, dubbed as the "five star
hotel on rails", will traverse 2,200
km, spanning the Konkan coast, the
Deccan plateau and Goa in early
February.

Passengers will be treated to an
unparalleled view of the Deccan
plateau and the golden beaches with
swaying coconut palms along the
Konkan coast.

A joint venture of the Indian
Railways and the Maharashtra Tourism
Development Corporation (MTDC),
Deccan Odyssey is expected to spin
cash for the government. MTDC
officials said the Deccan Odyssey was
modelled on the Palace on Wheels,
which has gained iconic status for
Rajasthan tourism. But the former is
perhaps one notch higher on the
luxury scale.

''The train has all the comforts of a
five-star hotel. Besides, passengers
will also get a view of the coastal
areas, a taste of Maharashtrian
culture and the beaches of Goa,''
said Ashish Kumar Singh, managing
director MTDC.

A single-occupancy suite in the train
during the peak season (October-
March) will leave you poorer by $480,
while a triple-occupancy suite will
cost $285. The Deccan Odyssey, which
will complete its journey in a week,
will accommodate 80 passengers. Its
21 blue coaches wear the "Maharaja"
look, replete with suites, gyms, two
restaurants and conference
facilities.

Costing around Rs 30 crore, the train
will be operated by the Railways, but
the MTDC will be in charge of
hospitality. "The MTDC will be
responsible for on-board catering,
sight-seeing, provision of staff,
interiors, marketing and even booking
packages," Singh said.

An Italian group has already booked
the entire train for its inaugural
run in February.

But will the high tariff come in the
way of the Deccan Odyssey's
popularity?

''We know the tariff is a bit high.
But we are providing what the foreign
tourists desire most when they come
to India -- privacy,'' Singh said.

Per night (high season), according to this site:

Someone who travelled on the Rajasthan version complained that for that kind of
money there should be more space and someplace to keep luggage.
