I'm hoping to get to Paris in October and looking for inexpensive
lodging. I was looking at the Hotel Esmeralda and wondering if anyone
had been there recently. Is the Marais district a more fun place to
be? Does anyone have advice on good places to stay under $60 a night?

If you leave the centre, you can find good quality clean hotels for less.

Le Maris is certainly fun... joyful... even, let's say, hum, gay...
I dunno how Hôtel Esméralda is inside but it is wonderfully located.
There are many unexpensive restaurants in this area, jazz-clubs, and
Notre-Dame just across the Seine..

let's just be blunt... le marais is the gay district... lots of gay
bars/clubs/etc.

but a good location regardless of your proclivities... like he says
Notre Dame is right across the seine and lots of other stuff in walking
distance.
