We want to visit lake Garda, italy, and wonder what town is the best in which
to stay. WE will be renting an apartment , and need to be close to local shops. ferries, and easily reached by public transport from one of the airports . Will probably be flying to Bergamo. Any advice will be appreciated. Roy |

Most likely you'd take a local bus from Orio to Bergamo rail station (easy), then a local train to Brescia, then change in Brescia to another train coming from Milan and stop either at Desenzano or Peschiera. These are the only places of lake Garda with a rail station. I have no idea how this station is close to the piers. Anyhow you could inquire on the Bergamo airport web site for connections http://www.sacbo.it/ You could also consult this site http://www.trasporti.regione.lombardia.it/trl_index.htm to get all timetables of public transport within Lombardy. There is a bus station in Bergamo and in Brescia, both close to the rail station. I doubt there is service from Bergamo to lake Garda, but there should be from Brescia (the lombard, S and W, shores are in such province). The same site has also all navigation timetables. You have to look elsewhere for buses on the venetian (E) shore (or trentine N shore). You could perhaps consider to fly to Verona which is closer to the lake. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- is a newsreading account used by more persons to avoid unwanted spam. Any advice will be appreciated. In terms of public transport, Desenzano and Peschiera are definitely the best places, as both lie on the main railway line from Milan to Venice, as noted by Giovanni Drogo. They also have reasonable bus links (e.g. both are on the Brescia Verona bus route), and are hubs of the boat service on the lake. In both cases, the station is some distance from the lake front, but taxis are available at reasonable prices. If renting an apartment, check where it is. Even Desenzano, which has a reasonable internal bus service, has no Sunday service, and the last buses run at about 8 p.m. However, apartments rented specifically as holiday accommodation are likely to be in the town centre. As Halan Harrison has specified. both train stations in Desenzano and Peschiera are far from the lake but the lake is easily reachable by taxi with a little bit of Google it will not be dificult to find agencies that rent apartments. expecially now that it is (very) low season. I guess you might spend about 300 to 500 eur per week. depending on the size and the position of the apartment. I like Colombare as it is a little away from Sirmioen.. but not so far that you cannot reach it with 30 minutes walk. shops and supermarkets are almost everywhere. there are shuttle boats among all the localities on the lake. Public service is not very efficient. as I guess that after 20.00 you will not find any bus or boat. Peschiera is a few kms from Verona.. easy reachable by train ( about 30 kms.. ) even Venice is not very far away. about 1.30 hours from Peschiera. other localities that you might consider are San martino della Battaglia ( where the Red Cross was founded ) Mantova and Vicenza. Mantova and Vicenza have very nice monuments.. Vicenza being the town where the Architect Andrea del Palladio made a few of his most famous buildings. |
