Northern France stopover?

I am travelling via Northern France on route south, can anyone advise
on a great place to stopover around the Brittany region,say 4 hours
from Calais with good restaurants and hotels ideal for a family of 4?

Brittany? A bit of a diversion, I think. Normandy looks like a more
natural route.

Why not look back at recent discussions here on "Brittany versus
Normandy"?

If you really want to stop in Brittany: Dinan is very attractive;
Rennes has a fair amount going for it; Nantes might disappoint you.
Further west looks like too much trouble.

Why not stay in Chartres - a wonderful cathedral and plenty of hotels and
restaurants. Take the A16 then A28 to Rouen then head for Evreux, Dreux then
Chartres. It's exactly 4 hours from Calais.

Alan you don't say where in the South you are going.

This time last year we did a long run down to our place near
Perpignan. Going down we meandered tho west route over the massif. But
coming back we tonked it up the motorway to a place called Troyes.
Easy short hop from there to Calais. East of Paris. Lovely old town
like York but with a Med style street atmosphere. We stayed in the
'arlequin' which is not the cheapest hotel in town but not too dear.
It is really cute and in the centre. 2 adults 2 kids and we got a
little suite.

The kids loved it. Loads of restaurants to choose from. Lots of
sitting outside on pedestrianised areas.

Its also a big Factory Shopping place apparently !
