Cheapest way to go to NYC and Boston from DC?
I'd like to visit NYC and Boston next month. I live in Maryland (near DC).
What would be the cheapest way for me to do this? Take Amtrak? Take Greyhound or another bus? Drive my car? Another option? If I drive my car, would I be able to park for free at the hotel or hostel that I stay at? If not, what's a ballpark figure for cost of parking per day? Thanks for any help. |

Cheapest way (beyond walking or bicycling) would be to travel by motorcoach. Washington Deluxe (www.washny.com), Vamoose (www.vamoosebus.com), and Chinese companies (www.ivymedia.com) generally charge $20 o/w, $35 r/t between Washington and New York. Chinese companies (www.ivymedia.com) generally charge $10 o/w, $20 r/t between New York and Boston. Thus, you can make the journey for as little as $30 o/w. $55 r/t. |

My guess is that greyhound would be your cheapest option, but what will you be doing in the NYC and Boston areas? Hanging in the center of town? Visiting attractions in the area? Yeah, just seeing the sights for the most part. Maybe a daytrip to Salem. |

wrote: Of course, if the cost is shared between two or more people traveling together, driving a car rapidly becomes more economical, besides being more convenient. Tolls, parking, depreciation, and maintenance are basically fixed costs regardless of the numbers of people, and the additional gas consumed isn't too great of a factor. By the time you get to 4 people, the car will almost always win on the economics. It might not be the most convenient if parking is hard to get. --- Bob |
