Independence Air to cease operations
Travel News
By Jessica Labrencis, SmarterTravel.com Staff --- Date Posted: 01/03/06 Independence Air to cease operations Independence Air will cease operations after 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 5. The low-fare airline filed for bankruptcy protection in early November after struggling financially since its inception in June 2004. Travelers with future Independence Air reservations, iCLUB members, and customers with unused flight credits on the airline are likely wondering how Independence Air's cessation will affect them (and their money). While some specific details are still being ironed out in bankruptcy court, Independence Air has begun outlining what will happen to travelers in several different situations. Independence Air is seeking bankruptcy court approval to automatically provide refunds to travelers holding tickets for future flights. Travelers who are scheduled to depart before the cessation of operations (or who have already departed), but are scheduled to return after January 5, may change their return flight to one of the remaining days of operation without a change fee. Changes made over the phone or on Flyi.com will not incur any fees; however, Independence Air notes that changes made on its website may incur a fare difference due to a website process that cannot be disabled. Consequently, it may be best to make any changes over the phone. Additionally, Independence Air's website provides information on the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which requires other airlines to provide standby tickets to stranded passengers in the event that an airline ceases operations. US Airways is the first of the major airlines to come forward with special provisions for stranded Independence Air travelers. Requests for refunds for any unused flight credits must be filed as a claim in Independence Air's bankruptcy case. Procedures for filing a proof of claim will be established by the court in the following weeks on Flyi.com. Future flights booked using iCLUB frequent flyer points will have no monetary value. Only the taxes and fees paid in conjunction with the flight will be eligible for refunds. http://www.smartertravel.com/advice/...3&u=SL4F6B4DC5 === "Computers make it easier to do a lot of things, but most of the things they make it easier to do don't need to be done." -- Andy Rooney _________________________________________ Usenet Zone Free Binaries Usenet Server More than 140,000 groups Unlimited download http://www.usenetzone.com to open account |
