Default missing digital camera

Flew from Newark to St Croix four weeks ago. Upon arriving at the
hotel, I noticed a note from TSA saying my bag has been searched and
the entire camera bag missing. A Nikon 5700 w/ 512MB memory card, a
spare rechargeable battery and 4 non-rechargeable ones are in the bag.

What option do I have other than not to pack valuables in checked
luggage. This is the first time it happens to me. I've packed my
Nikon in the luggage in the past. I've since filed a claim with TSA.
Doubt anything can be done though.

Try filing a claim with your home owners insurance.

Why would home insurance pay for such negligence?

Should you use the mailblocks package and expect a response from me,
you should preauthorize the dissensoftware.com domain.

I very rarely bother responding to challenge/response systems,
especially those from irresponsible companies.

I think my home owners insurance has a deductible of $500. The loss is
about $1,100. I've never file a claim before. Guess I should at least
try.

because this is what homeowner's insurance is for. Homeowners
insurance covers so much more than the house or on site contents. It
includes the possessions that you carry off site. Including items
carelessly left in plain view in your car for example.

No it's not. It's for things entirely outside your control.
Packing a valuable in an unlocked case is negligent and if the
insurance company pays out, I shall eat my hat.

I think you'll find that this is an exclusion as well (some exclude
anything left in an unattended car, even if out of sight)

A. I doubt the TSA will reimburse you for the loss. The bag was "in the
custody" of nonTSA baggage handlers at Newark and St. Croix, sort of
broadenbing the field of suspects (and both groups represent a potential
"den of thieves" more likely than TSA, who generally have a pretty good
record when it comes to looting - being in plain sight of each other much of
the time).

B. Less deductible, your US "Homeowners" policy will cover part of the
loss. That's part of why you have the policy.

C. You do now appreciate the standard warning, "Don't put valuables in
checked luggage!", don't you? Like zipping your fly, the warnings should
have sunk in by now.
