Indeed, it makes the local news every winter when surfers come from
all over the world to catch the big waves there. Unfortunately, there
has been at least one death.

Actually Mavericks, about 20 miles south of San Francisco, sometimes has
gargantuan waves and is considered one of the premier big-wave locations
for big wave surfers! Depends on the weather out at sea.
