Police & Crime in Vietnam?

I've heard stories from people who visited Vietnam & said the Police tried to
extort money from them...

Example: a taxi driver demanding more money than originally agreed upon & when
my friends objected to paying the extra amount...the driver called the police &
they had to pay the taxi driver AND the policemen.

I've been reading about Hue & Hanoi and they sound fascinating......however, i
like to enjoy my vacations without having to worry about getting ripped off
every time i take a taxi or pass a policemen.

Have any of you had experieces similar to this story? How bad is the problem
in Central/Northern Vietnam?

There are corrupt police and corrupt taxi drivers in every country on
this planet.

Yes, and the last thing you do in a situation like this is wait around
for the police. You get out of the taxi and walk away.

No, I travelled twice in Viet Nam and never had any problmes of that sort.
But stay away from the policee. Only robbery attempt we were exposed to were
in Hue where they tried to charge us 5 USD entrance of each tomb. Costs 5
cents for Vietnamese. We boycotted them and rented a small motorbike and
took a tour along the Perfume River instead.
