downshifting when going down hills can blow up an automatic.
it's not recommended for most of them. and it's not good for
manual xmissions either.

It's not bad at all for manual trasmissions. In fact it's recommended
procedure for steep hill decents.

certainly. part of my job involves hanging notices on doorways
in mobile home (caravan, to you) parks. it's much easier to
stop, put the car in "park", deliver, get in, put it in "drive",
stop, ... with an auto. that's one reason why most US taxis and
police cars have auto xmissions. so do most busses, especially
urban busses.

That's one place where you will find a lot of Auto xmission in the UK.
Nearly all urban buses are autos.

Those of us who drive in San Francisco probably do more downshifting
than the vast majority of the world's drivers. We're quite expert at it.

As I previously said, I've never had to replace a clutch in any of my
several sticks and I've never had a repair of any kind to any of the
automatic transmissions I've owned.

I consistently downshift on hills and usually when getting off a freeway.

As I commented to Carmen, you can hear 'em but y'can't feel 'em. I'm
proud that people comment on the smoothness of my driving as they've
been doing for many decades. No, I don't drive slowly but I do stop
slowly if the traffic allows.

My new car (a year old today) has four-wheel disk brakes. They're
terrific! Quiet, smooth, and very effective.
