Driving from San Francisco to San Diego in Late Feb

I have the whole last weekend in February to drive from SF down to the
SD area. I'll have by brand new DSLR camera with me, so I'm looking
for suggestions of where to stop/stay enroute to find interesting
scenery and people to photograph. Cars and airplanes are also
favorite subjects, so please tell me of any interesting museums along
the way.

If you drive down the Pacific Coast Highway (1), you will go right past Half
Moon Bay airport, if you want airplane pix. Other than that, count on a slow
but scenic drive.

Go down 101 and Hollister has an air museum, and Watsonville Airport may
have a museum.

Since you're probably coming through L.A, eat at the 94th Aero
Squadron, located just off the runway of Van Nuys airport.

It's about 2 miles west of I-405 at Exit 68/Roscoe Blvd.

The Museum of Flying in Santa Monica is currently closed pending
relocation to new facilities by late 2007/early 2008. See http://

On the automotive front, there's the Petersen Automotive Museum near
Wilshire Blvd and Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles.

If you take 101, about 30 minutes south of San Francisco is the Hiller
Aviation Museum and Institute in San Carlos. However, if you instead take 1
it takes you past Half Moon Bay and Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the most
photographed light houses on the west coast.

Either way you can get to Santa Cruz, which has a very scenic old roller
coaster and interesting folks down wandering the boardwalk, even if the
rides aren't open. Another area scenic for people watching and colorful
buildings is the beach and esplanade in Capitola, just down the coast
slightly from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

Continuing down the coast on 1 will take you past the Watsonville airport, a
darling small airport that I believe still has a Bi-plane for hire, if you
are interested in aerial photography.

Continuing on you get to Monterey and Carmel, great places for people
watching in scenic town or pier settings. Seventeen mile drive is great for
photographing scenery.

Then there is Big Sur, Hearst Castle, Pismo Beach (I think cars can drive on
the sand, I haven't seen it, but that would be cool to photograph), Santa
Barbara, and LA.

Feb can be rainy, so I couldn't find any car shows that weekend in
California. Others have mentioned other airports and museums. Have a great
trip.

If the Goodyear blimp is home, it's visible from the San Diego
Freeway in Carson. You can then get off the freeway to take some
photos of it.

has several. One is Travel Town in Griffith Park near I-5/CA-134
