Kenya - recommended tour operators?
Hello!
Are there any Kenya based tour operators you would recommend from fresh experience - or, on the contrary, others that you would avoid? Besides, I can't seem to remember correctly the name of a big one (?), probably UK based (?), that was in the market some 10 years ago, which was called Guerna or Guerica or the like. Somebody here knows the correct name? Thanks |

Somebody here knows the correct name? The company you're thinking of is probably Guerba. It's generally an overlanding company, though I believe they also do some lodge/tented camp based safaris. I believe they have a good reputation in the overlanding business and know a couple who did one of their lodge safaris withou problems, that was several years ago. Maybe you should clarify whether you're interested in overlanding or lodge safaris, and whether you want to join a group or go independently. Slainte Liz --http://www.v-liz.com- Kenya; Tanzania; Namibia; India; Galapagos Yes, thanks to both of you. You're right, Guerba was the name. They had that reputation of doing some kind of alternative trips, years ago. No idea, if that was an acurate label then, or even less, if it is today. I haven't been to Kenya for about 10 years. Before that I joined small and privately managed safaris that may come close to what you call overlanding. Most of the nights in the bush were spent in tiny 2- persons-tents, which sure was an extraordinary experience - but I fear I am too old for that sort of accommodation by now ;-) So I'd guess that a lodge safari would be the better suitable thing for me now - but then ... who knows? I wouldn't mind joining a group as long as that doesn't mean to be part of the 30-people-load on an alternative truck ... A small party of max 5 or 6 people would be fine. Greetings |

ups.com Paul Altmann wrote: So I'd guess that a lodge safari would be the better suitable thing for me now - but then ... who knows? Normally my first port of call would be Express Travel Group, www.etg-safaris.com who have a wide range of safaris on offer, but generally specialise in tailor-mades. However, to be honest there are lots of excellent safari companies (because I'm now travelling with a group, I was with Pollman's last year, which was also fine). I don't know of any to avoid, just read the small print very carefully: if it isn't on your itinerary, you'll have to pay for it (e.g. extra game drives, side trips, meals). Most companies spell out exactly what you get. Make sure that you get in writing that you'll get a window seat. Preferably not more than six in your party, possibly seven if the seat beside the driver is utilised (if a 'leader' is included (generally unnecessary), other than the driver guide, s/he should sit there, otherwise all participants should rotate). Difference in costs are really down to season, number of participants, single-room supplements in high season, and the accommodation used. The big lodges tend to be cheaper, the quality is generally very high, but there could be 200 people staying there in high season. (Off-season far fewer.) Try to include at least one luxury tented camp in your trip - more expensive, but IMO worth it. Safari njema Liz -- http://www.v-liz.com - Kenya; Tanzania; Namibia; India; Galapagos |

Somebody here knows the correct name? Thanks Hi Paul..I actually went on a Guerba safari very recently...if you are looking for an overlanding experience, then they are very good indeed. I was lucky in that there were only 6 of us on a trip designed for 20 people..it's juts the luck of the draw. I cannot recomend enough how great they are as a company, their staff added a LOT to such a wonderful experience. that said, i doubt i'd overland again...the rustic element is wonderful, but with the prospect of up to 20 fellow passengers, it might be a bit too much. i'd definatly pay a bit extra and do a lodge safari, perhaps one where you can make your own iternary. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |
