Driving yourself or taking a tour? I don't have any personal experience
taking a tour, but when you get to your hotel in Vegas there'd be a rack of
all kinds of tours, from bus to helicopters, from going with a group to
tailored just for you.
Thanks,

Keith

Don't do it.

The Grand Canyon is worthy of more than a herded bus trip or overpriced
fly-by.

Agreed. I just returned from there and drove a rental car. Its
a 4-5 hr. drive from Vegas and sightseeing flights are cheaper
from the GC airport. Stay at least one night in the park...

or nearby Flagstaff.

If you have the time, I advise circling the park and seeing Zion
NP as well. It has, IMO, a greater variety and better hiking.

If interested seeing some photos, I posted some online at

I've never taken a helicopter tour so I can't comment
about them, although they do look like fun. There are a
number of bus tours available which leave early morning
and return at night. For example, Gray Line has a
day trip which costs $150 per person. You can download
their brochu
http://www.grayline.com/pdf/lasvegas...e-Brochure.pdf

At your Vegas hotel you'll probably find brochures for
a number of different tour companies.

If you drive, it's roughly a 5 hour drive each way to the
south rim. So if you leave Vegas early, you can spend
most of the afternoon there and return in the evening.
That'll give you time to stop at the Visitor's Center,
visit several of the overlooks, and perhaps hike a short
distance into the Canyon on the Bright Angel Trail to
get a glimpse of the canyon from below the rim.

But I'd strongly recommend spending at least one night
there if you can.
