Default England: Guided versus self-guided?

I really would prefer to go on our own. Our itinerary hasn't
been determined yet, but do you think in 11 days we can manage
Cambridge, London, Bath, Cornwall, and Wales? I don't believe in
hit-and-run "see all the sites" tourism, but we would at least
like to spend a couple of days exploring each of these. Is that
completely unreasonable?

Yes. Cambridge, London, and Bath, sure. But Cornwall and Wales are
like whole other countries, and require a car to see properly. I just
spent two whole weeks by car in Wales and saw a third of what I wanted
to see. Your ambition is admirable, but just do the cities and see if
you can fit in a side trip to the city of Wells from Bath, instead.
There are surely buses to Wells from Bath, but I cannot speak from
experience on this.

There are, but ISTR they stop running fairly early -- I remember having to
hitch back once and it was still daylight. Of course, things may have
changed, but a reminder to check the return times can't harm.

Bath/Wells timetable herewith - just click on the day of the week on
which you wish to travel.

Alternatively, later connections are available by doing a detour via
Bristol:

and then going Bristol - Bath

"Day Explorer" tickets are available on the bus for a day's unlimited
travel on the First Badgerline and Bristol First Cityline network.
Price £6 before 09:00 Mon-Fri, £5 after 09:00 - £5 on Sats and Suns
without time restriction.

I use them a lot, being carless.
