Default req. opinions on Istanbul hotels: Ottoman Hotel, Hali Hotel

About to schedule a short tour in Turkey. I'm searching
opinions on these two Istanbul hotels below. Could anyone
provide first-hand experiences? Services, food, location,
neighbourhood, etc. Are them centrally located, say, near
Ayia Sofya, Grand Bazaar and the like?

* Ottoman Hotel
Kadirgalimani Cad, 85

* Hali Hotel
Klodfarer Cad, 20

Many thanks for any response.

I can't place the first one (don't have my streetmap handy),
but Klodfarer (bizarre un-Turkish name, is it German?) is
midway in between Ayasofya and the Grand Bazaar. The downside
of which is that it's also dead centre in all the tourist-
oriented hassle - "Hali" means "carpet" and if it's the one
I think it is, it has a carpet emporium downstairs, so you
won't even get away from carpet salesmen by going back to
the hotel.

I have come to prefer the clump of hotels next to Sirkeci
railway station - handy for the tram, city buses & ferries,
things open till late at night, less aggressive salesmen.
But if everything you want to see in Istanbul is in the
Sultanahmet area then the Hali should be fine.

And by sheer fluke I found an answer to that question today, flipping
through a book about the ancient Middle East by Julian Huxley. It's
named after the French author Claude Farrere (the Turkish spelling is
dead-on phonetic). Huxley got the name slightly wrong, as "Farrel",
which nearly googleproofed him. Two of his books have titles which
suggest Turkish settings and this describes another one:

Not many people know that. Drabelle didn't think he was in print
in any language, but maybe Turkish (or Japanese? - how many authors
end up inspiring the name of a perfume?) might be worth a try.

[I figured rec.arts.books is the appropriate place for this chain
of free associations to go...]

Have you checked www.tripadvisor.com for Istanbul hotels?
