Default Flight UK to S Africa

Hi, my partner & me are looking to fly out end of Nov begining Dec,
flying back end of March ish. Ideally we would like to fly Manchester
to Johannesburg but airports & dates are flexible. Grateful for any
advice on how to get the cheapest fare.

Also, what are the travel options between Africa & Madagascar? Is
flying the only option?

TIA

AFAIK there are no flights direct from Manchester, only through
Heathrow. I also don't know of any of the real low-cost airlines
flying in here. The usual large airlines (SAA, Virgin, KLM, BA, Swiss,
Lufthansa etc) all fly in, and so do several of the cheaper airlines
such as TAAG Angolan Air, Air Gabon, Ghana Airlines etc. but these
often require a short stay in their home country on the way in.

I'm not a person who is scared of flying and I've done my share of
third-world aircraft, but personally, I'd always prefer to spend a
little bit more to fly a reputable airline.

Try http://www.flysaa.com for special offers. If you play around with
dates, you can often get very good pricing. Who knows, you may be
lucky.

Madagascar is best visited by air. You could take a ship, but they're
infrequent, and time consuming.

If your plan is to get to Madagascar, and not necessarily to South
Africa, try Air France and Air Austral for flights from Paris.

Regards,
Marc

Since no-one else has answered, I'll suggest Trailfinders, who usually
come up trumps, but aren't really Africa specialists. Might be worth
also looking at Flightsavers, though I've never used them.

I heard that one of the cheap independent airlines (maybe Fly
Globespan?) was flying to South Africa, but I suspect it was Cape
Town.

I would also check with Trailfinders or other good agents.

Using Trailfinder I paid about £420 to LHR to Cape Town flying out in
September - about £200 for the fare and another £220 for taxes etc. This was
the best deal that Trailfinders had when I bought it in about June. The
flight was actually with LH to Frankfurt, then a codeshare on SAA - very
good service etc.

But later I saw direct flights (London to Cape Town or Joburg) for only a
little more and from London it would have been worth the extra to save the
time wasted on the Frankfurt connection.

From Manchester your best options could be with a European carrier - KLM,
LH, etc - anything to avoid a transfer in LHR.

Nationwide is a SAfrica carrier that flies between Gatwick &
Johannesburg.
I did a quick look at a schedule similar to the one you described, out
Nov. 27,
returning March 7, and found the fare to be £480 + £137.20 in taxes per
person.
Here's the web site - you could try inserting dates that are specific to
your
plans and see what comes up: http://www.flynationwide.co.za/

Hi,
I'm coming in here late, I know - just got back from Mossel Bay, where
the weather was miserable!

Be careful when you check the prices of flights on SAA. I'm not sure if
it's the same with the International flights, but I've often found a
local flight on SAA, cheaper than the others, only to find when I go to
pay for it that they haven't included the airport taxes and the price
goes up dramatically. The other local airlines include the taxes in
their price, so what you see is what you pay.

As I said, I'm not sure if it's the same with the International rates -
just be aware.
