So Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson were victims,

The French conned Eisenhower into "helping" them in Indo China and then
split. Kennedy had no choice but to continue the "help" and Johnson was
burdened with the quagmire. Nixon said (in paraphrase) "We won! The war's
over. We're going home. Good bye, Viet-Nam".

Rubbish. Kennedy had a choice. He chose to go to war in Vietnam. Johnson
could very well have declined to continue the war, he chose not to do so.
Nixon decided to withdraw from Vietnam and he did so. Simple facts. Period.

Not quite. The French agreed to leave Vietnam in 1954 under the terms
of an agreement reached in Geneva that split the country in
two. President Dwight D. Eisenhower wrote to the new Prime Minister
of the Bao Dai government, Ngo Dinh Diem, in September 1954 promising
United States support for a noncommunist South Vietnam.
Direct United States aid to South Vietnam began in January 1955,
and American advisors began arriving the following month to train South
Vietnamese army troops.

US troops were committed BECAUSE of the French withdrawal not
despite it.
Keith

Nevertheless, the troops were not combat troops, but, rather advisory troops.
No American combat troops were sent to Vietnam during the Eisenhower
Administration. KM

I didn't believe that euphemism then and I still do.
