and the source of much of that spam is google.

Naw, other sources far out succeed google.

I've sat in 2 Stanford PhD thesis defenses on google/link spam.
I also moderate a comp.* group and have to hand filter all that spam.

It all really depends what sources grab your email. I had Greek spam
today (happens occasionally as well as Canadian spam). Korean and
Chinese and Taiwanese spam is fairly common. I know the source of much
of the Japanese spam from one trip a week in Tokyo as the hostel
association. The South American countries are pretty middle of the road.
At IJCAI, Telefonica in Spain was advertising for positions, and I gave
serious consideration to scrawling "SPAMMERS" on thir job poster.
Various Middle Eastern countries: Israeli to Saudi and Iran spam.
Singapore is annoying which is quite a contrast to physical security there.
But right now Russian spam has to seriously be watched. It's not merely
their volume, but it's what they are doing.

You can also use message filters to block certain senders and topics.
You can block a lot of spam simply by filtering anything sent from gmail.

Does Googlegroups have filters?

Good question. I don't use Google. I just suffer from the spammers who do.

Ivce assumed the OP used Googlegroups, else why the demand?
Unless Google has filters, your advice, as good as it is, is
pointless.

In general, no. (You can do limited filtering by using Advanced
Search.)

Google, this Group which used to be an interesting one for getting
information
and, in a question in my competence, I used to answer.

But now I find that this has become nothing but TRASH full of
advertisemtents
for trips, tours, equipment, etc.

So I shall not be back.

I would like to see Google start a NEW group on REAL TRAVEL
and get rid of the S**T in this group.

Yeah, but even after filtering out all the junk, we've still got the
basic problem that there's relatively little useful discussion these
days. And that's true in many of the unmoderated newsgroups.

Newsgroups are kind of a relic from the early days of the internet and
most users are going elsewhere these days.

And I'm speaking as an old-timer who remembers the days when spam was
rare and many folks would actually put their real name in their posts;
sometimes their signature lines would even have their address and
phone number!

I still do - in German newsgroups it is a question of politeness
to do so, and you get filtered by many if you don't.
Maybe that's one of the reasons usenet still works over here?

The existence of web-based discussion forums can't explain the
decline in quality of the English speaking part outside "uk..."
of usenet. I.e. not the local, but the more international groups.
What happened?

Very interesting.

I think it's a factor. The spam & lack of civility in unmoderated
groups has led people to go to moderated web forums instead.
