The difference being Starbucks and other coffee retail suppliers are
driivng up their prices while coffee bean prices, at least at producer
level, is at a very low point.

Starbucks is not the only one doing that. Granted, their prices always
have been high. Tim Hortons recently boosted their prices for no other
reason that to honour the board's commitment to doubling dividends for
their shareholders. At least Starbucks provides nice comfortable seats
and an atmosphere designed to make you feel comfortable instead of the
fast food decor that makes you want to leave within 20 minutes.

advertises the Starbuck shops
opens shops,
designs/approves the layout and equipment
stocks them with supplementry products ( snacks )
contracts for delivery of sugar, cream supplies
hires employees to manage and run the shops
buys insurance, pays taxes
disposes of garbage
hires cleaning crews to clean the shops
etc. etc. etc.

I was watching Univision evening new yesterday (Spanish) and the report
mentioned that out of each dollar that the typical Starbuck's customer
spends on coffee, an average of 2 or 3 cents actually ends up in the

coffee
farmers pockets. Can this be true? This was a report about Central and
South American coffee growers.

Take any finished product then trace it all the way back to where the raw
materials originate and see how much they actually get.

2 - 3% of retail is actually quite a lot, I'd be suprised if it really is
this high.

Not surprising at all. How much of each $3.00 you spend for bread
at a bakery goes back to the wheat farmer?

And if you stop buying coffee the grower dies because he has no income!

bread prices do generally reflect the price of wheat and flour though

OR buy the Fair Trade Coffee at Starbucks. The amount the grower gets is much
higher with that coffee, and money is also put into the community. If we
created a demand for this coffee they would sell more of it!
