Trek to Kilimanjaro
Hello, I am hoping to do a Kilimanjaro trek next year and am seeking
recommendations for a reliable outfitter. I would also appreciate any suggestions for how to find a reliable trekking outfitter in general. Are there any publications that rate them? Also, if you've done the trek, which route would you recommend? Thank you in advance for your assistance. Cheers! |

Trek to Kilimanjaro
Hi Denise
I went up Kili 3 years ago via the Rongai route. We took the extra day for acclimatisation, (summit on the fifth day) and it was well worth it! I would avoid the Marangu route for going up. It is a 'long straight road' with a lot of semi-serious walkers simply looking to tick off another hill.... (sorry, a bit harsh but it *does* get busy). I would look at either the Rongai or Shira routes to avoid the crowds. Most routes come back down via Marangu - but this is not an issue as you will be so tired that you won't notice (he he). Not sure what you mean by an 'outfitter' - in the UK I get most of my hiking gear from Millets/Blacks, or else The Outdoor shop (Milton Keynes) for more specialist stuff. You won't need anything particularly specialised; just reasonable quality - particularly boots, sleeping bag and some 'layers'. Have you planned who to go with? Happy to give recommendations etc if you want. Have a look at my trip log - http://www.tomalin.org/charles/tanzania/index.htm Rgds Charles "Denise" wrote in message ups.com...
