Default Cost for flying within Africa?

It seems most every flight to Africa cost around $3500. This is from
DC and NY to Cameroon or South Africa. Is anything else available?

Which are safe airlines to use within Africa?

Thanks,
Brett

For what it is worth, I'm planning a trip myself for next year and have been
researching ways to improve the cost of travel.

I will be flying from (USA)California and into Kenya or Tanzania.

What I have discovered is that it it SUBSTANTIALLY more cost effective to
fly from the US to Europe and then onto your final destination.

I will be saving myself neary $1000 by flying to either London, Paris,
Amsterdam, or Zurich

As for in-country travel, so far I have obtained no information on that
aspect. Perhaps someone else will be kind enough to enlighten us both.

Regards,

Justin

Hi Brett,

Try looking at flights from Europe, they are miles cheaper than you are
quoting. Early booking gets the best prices. We pay about £550 (Sterling)
return for Johannesburg from London.

There are much cheaper, but you will be flying around most of the near east
to get there. Try KLM they seem to be able to get under everyone's prices
for most flights, just get to Schiphol.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Just so long as you brace yourself to accept the much lower carry on and
freight allowance on most European, and especially UK airlines, compared to
US ones, though I notice they've been falling recently.

Liz,

Thanks for sharing your insights and experience. The pictures on your
website are awesome! Hopefully, I will be able to take some nice ones of my
own.

Your comments inspired another question. Can anyone out there in cyberspace
make recommendations for what sort of items I should pack in preparation for
general touring and for 10 to 14 day safari through the Serengeti.

I usually travel pretty light. Most everything I carry on trips would fit
in a good sized backpack. Other than basic toiletries, digital camera, and
modest clothing, what else would I need.

My packing list is on my w/site:
http://www.v-liz.co.uk/safari/hints/tippac.htm

One thing to remember is that you're unlikely to be able to replace
anything, as you're unlikely to be near regular shops. The lodges can stock
surprising things in their shops, but just as likely they'll be out of
things or won't have something you'd regard as a 'basic'.

So a lot of the stuff on my list is 'just in case'.
On my last Kenyan safari I only took two pairs of trousers as usual, but
bizarrely one pair split for no apparent reason (*no* comments!). I had to
buy the only pair of trousers my size in the lodge shop (I was 'lucky', as
there only were three pairs) - for £39!!!. After the first day the elastic
gave way and the zip wouldn't stay up. I had to use safety pins for the rest
of the trip when wearing these...

Most of the weight in my packing is my camera equipment and my field guides.
Most driver/guides have good field guides, but I don't suppose you can rely
on these either, unless your company has specifically said so. Our guides
have them, but we like to have our own, too.
