Has anyone been to Ethiopia visiting the historical towns ?I am looking for
someone who organises trips for two persons, maybe with a guide at each place, and if possible travel by road as the rods seem to be better than a few years ago. Thanks Roy |

Hi Roy,
We just returned from Ethiopia and visited both the Northern part (historical route) and the Southern part (tribes etc.). All magnificent! Roads: In principle not really bad but in order to safe time the best option is an inland flight from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar (safe you two days, flight is inexpensive) for visiting several churches and monasteries at Lake Tana & Blue Nile falls. Take from there a car (4x4 not absolute necessary but preferable) and make your roundtrip via Gondar (Falisadas palace, churches etc.), Axum (steles etc.), Adigrat down to the province of Tigray where a lot of churches can be visited up to Lalibela (a must!) From Lalibela to Addis back take again an inland flight as this part has not so much highlights. There is only one large touroperator in Ethiopia , it is an Italian one from origin. Look for: http://www.greenlandtours.net Ethiopia is a beautiful country (we lived/worked there for 3 years) For photo's and the itinerary we did, have a look at our homepage: http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~louine If you need more info let me know greetings, Lou Andreoli (Human, wildlife & nature photographer) Lou Andreoli "roy king" schreef in bericht . .. I'm planning to buy the Historical route air ticket, any idea of price level locally vs back home? Any problem to get a ticket at short notice? What about air safety? What type of planes? Was there water in the falls, any special 'Falls Day' with more water? Take from there a car (4x4 not absolute necessary but preferable) and make your roundtrip via Gondar (Falisadas palace, churches etc.), Axum (steles etc.), Adigrat down to the province of Tigray where a lot of churches can be visited up to Lalibela (a must!) Whats the highlights of Lalibela? From Lalibela to Addis back take again an inland flight as this part has not so much highlights. Can you give more info about visa. Must get visa in advance at home or is it fairly simple at the airport on arrival? Visa cost? Visa currency? Any or only ETB? Any problems with currency exchange? Banking time in Addis and the Historical route? Any problems exchanging EUR, or is USD a must? Wow, wow, soooo many questions. /Regards, Anders There is only one large touroperator in Ethiopia , it is an Italian one from origin. Hi again, I got some new questions about your trip around Ethiopia:
Hotel Recommendations for Bahar Dar, Gondar, Lalibela, Aksum and Addis? What hotels did you stay at? Experience? Price Level? Address and phone/fax and email to hotel? Your Recommendation? Did you find any useful Internet Cafe around in Addis and/or elsewhere? Any insect problems in the Lalibela churches? I read somewhere about flee problems in the floor rugs. /Regards, Anders I'm planning to buy the Historical route air ticket, any idea of price level locally vs back home? Hi Nisse,
We stayed: Bahar Dar, Gihon Hotel, 8-200111 (8- area code), Internet cafe available, very simple, but situated at a very cosy place at Lake Tana Gondar, Belegez pension, 8-114356, very very simple Axum, Africa hotel, 4-753700, reasonable Lalibela, Bethlehem hotel 6-811425, good! Addis Ababa, Holiday hotel, 1-612081, good, friendly & cosy Yes there are "problems" in Lalibela concerning flees in some churches but they are friendly and disappear after some time. Most hotels have NO mail possibilities I would say this of Ethiopia: Going to Eth. means BACK TO BASIC. Most hotels are no hotels in the way we know, sometimes there is some water for the shower, sometimes not and mostly of coarse not warm. If you make hotel reservations it does not mean that there is any place when you arrive. Internetcafe's have sometimes very bad connections etc. etc.(forget internet in Eth.) But go for the people, culture & country! (lot of your questions, prices and others can be found in the "Bible" Loneley Planet: Ėthiopia, Eritrea & Djibouti, ISBN 086442292X) You need it!! ================================== Lou Andreoli Human, wildlife & nature photographer http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~louine ================================== "Nisse PowerMan" schreef in bericht ... I visited Ethiopia last year and had a great time. Due to limited
guidebooks that quickly become out of date (probably also my journal!) I put my journal/travel guide on the Rough Guides site. Hope you find it useful... http://travel.roughguides.com/planni...ournalID=21967 -- Don Ecclestone, Toronto Canada To reply, remove the "-SPAMINATOR" L. Andreoli wrote in message ...
