Default Lufthansa coach exit row seats

Howdy again everybody,
I have booked my flight to Bucharest and am sitting in coach for 11 hours
from LAX to Munich.
When I called to change my seat assignment I asked about the exit row seats
and was told that
they are assigned the day of the flight at check in.
How is it possible to grab one of these seats? What's my best chance of
getting one early check in? late check in?

In a previous post I asked about weaseling an upgrade but I really don't
think that will happen.
I only have 14k on my FF miles so I'm desperate for the leg room.
I look forward to your replies and I will return to burning the incense and
chanting a mantra.
Take care
Tom

A growing number of airlines seem to sell the exit row seats at checkin.
So turn up early and bring an extra 100 EUR.
(I dont know if LH sell them).

Ten years ago or so you could show up at the airport three hours
early and almost be guaranteed an exit row seat. United, and other
airlines, now allow Most-Exalted-Fliers to reserve exit row seats
in advance. I do not know if Lufthansa has the same policy.

I'd check in early and ask politely. I flew BOS-FRA in July. When I
left, BOS was completely chaotic because the power had failed for
about an hour that afternoon and as I arrived 2.5 hrs before the
nominal flight time they were just getting the computers rebooted and
the luggage belts restarted. But when I finally got up to the desk, I
stood up, being nearly 2m tall, asked nicely for an exit row seat, and
she gave me one. The exit row on a 340 is nice, plenty of leg room
and the seat's not too narrow.

But when I finally got up to the desk, I stood up,

So were you sliding your butt on the floor until that point?

My flight does not leave until 16:40 so I might just get there 3 or 4 hours
early.
Very close to LAX is a little thai place with a waitress that is drop dead
gorgeous
so maybe Check in and eat some lunch and a thai beer or two or three.

Sitting on my suitcase, I think. I'd been in line for about five
hours at that point.

Have a German caterer deliver
food to the airport prior to your
check in or tell them you know
a secret about one of their
spouses.
