Default Reno -> San Francisco

Hi,

we're doing a short trip to the USA at the end of November. Out trip
starts in LA, goes over Las Vegas and Reno to San Francisco and back
home. It's our 7th time in LA and Vegas. We also know the horror of
miles between Las Vegas and Reno, but we don't know the area between
Reno and SF above the highway which links both citys.
We got three days for it (Reno - SF). Is there anything interesting
to visit? How about Sacramento? Never been there. We also thought
about staying a little longer in Reno for doing some day trips.
There's no reason to stay in SF, because we've been in SF several
times. So, is there a must see between Reno and SF. I know there is a
Six Flags park :-). We like shopping, but we also like nature. All
suggestions welcome.

Thank you
Roland

Well I hear there's some river called "The Trucker" or something that flows
into a lake called "The Hoe" or whatever, that some people like to go to. I
hear you can even gambol there, at least on the Nirvana side. Pretty, close
to Reknow.

Well there is this little lake somewhere in there called Lake Tahoe. You
can pretty much spend your three days there.

A day in Sacto (you wouldn't necessarily have to stay the night there)
would be nice. If you're even remotely interested in railroads, the
California State Railroad Museum (www.csrmf.org) would definitely be
worth a visit. If your visit is during the last weekend of November,
you can take a ride on the Santa Train. (The normal train ride along
the Sacramento River only runs spring-summer.) And then you can browse
Old Town Sacramento. Of course, there are also a bunch of other museums
and historical sites in Sacramento, including the Indian Museum, the
Wells Fargo History Museum, Sutter's Fort, the old Governor's Mansion
(I think you're going to be a bit early to see its Christmas finery),
etc. etc. See www.sacmuseums.org for more information. And it isn't
a long drive to the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma.

We also thought
about staying a little longer in Reno for doing some day trips.

It depends on where you want to go on your day trips, but to my
mind, the Lake Tahoe area would be a better jump-off location.
If you stay at the north end of the lake, you can go up to Truckee
and Donner Lake, drive around Lake Tahoe, etc. conveniently. Much
prettier than Reno, too!

Yeah, SF Marine World is in Vallejo if you're interested. Very handy
to the Napa Valley if you want to spend some time there.

A bit NE of Sacramento is the "GOld Country" area. It should fit unless
the weather is bad. FFM

Near Reno- Virginia City "wild west" town preserved from 19-century.
Lake Tahoe - near Lake Tahoe place of winter olympics 1960- Squaw
Valley (cable car), also near Lake Tahoe "Ponderosa Ranch" in Incline
Village( Remember TV-serial "Bonanza" ?)ticket may be 15$. Pyramid
Lake about 40 min drive from Reno(in Indian reservation). If you want
more fun, prostitution is legal in Nevada. Brothels short drive from
Reno. Casinos, mostly in Reno, Carson City and at Lake Tahoe (only
Nevada side.)But in November can be cold (guess 0C?) and some snow in
this area.

I disagree. Made me laugh aloud.

Someone else said that "prostitution is legal in Nevada". Not quite
true. It is illegal in most of Nevada. Some counties have opted to
make it legal and they're where you'll find the brothels. Prostitution
is illegal in most of the United States of America but Nevada has
opted to allow its counties to make their own decision.

Now to Roland's question:
Your plans might be blown by snow as that's not a good time to be
travelling up there. A few years ago, I think the second week-end in
November, I'm quite certain that I was driving the last car permitted
over the summit without chains. It was extremely dangerous as there
were several miles where I wasn't quite sure where the road was and
the tracks of the car ahead of me weren't lasting long.

The suggestion for Virginia City, for example, although a good one
that I endorse might not be possible because of snow.

Getting to Lake Tahoe from Reno via Mount Rose might be difficult or
impossible. I'll be making that trip around 02:00 on November 7 after
the dance band quits in Sparks and I head for SouthShore.

From InterState Highway 80, you could take Highway 20 to Nevada City
and Grass Valley on Highway 49. Continue on Highway 49 through Auburn
down to Placerville to turn right on Highway 50 into Sacramento.

In Sacramento I highly recommend a visit to the State Capitol that's
been restored to its April, 1906. glory. The Governor's Mansion,
Sutter's Fort, the Railroad Museum, and Old Town have already been
mentioned. I agree with each.

There's much else to see and do but up there, at that time of year,
you could get into trouble.
