Kenya and money
I'm off to Kenya soon and was wodering what is the best currency to take,
sterling, euros or US dollars. I have had conflicting information and was wondering what others think. How easy is it to exchange travellers cheques in the hotels and banks. Thanks in advance regards David |

Thanks in advance regards David David, it is easy to exchange travellers cheques in hotels and banks, some safari lodges may be less easy so have enough money when you go. In my experience some US dollars with you is always a good idea, in fact many tours are quoted in US dollars. Pat. -- Pat Anderson |

Some or many companies take traveller's cheques, but you can always cash them in a bank branch. However, take your Maestro (ec) card with you, because it is about the best way to get Kenya Shillings at the Barclays ATMs. More information is at http://michna.com/kenya.htm#Money . I don't even take travellers' cheques any more. I only take the Maestro card, a credit card to pay in lodges and as an emergency measure for the case that all else fails, and a couple of hundred $$ and ¤¤ in cash. You may need a small bundle of $$ though, particularly in small denominations, because some nature reserves take only $$, and since they don't always adapt to the exchange rate quickly, paying in $ may be quite a bit cheaper than paying in ¤. The same holds for buying the visa at the airport on arrival. Better have $50 on hand when you arrive. Always take some extra cash with you, just in case. Hans-Georg -- No mail, please. |
