We are going on an Alaska Cruisetour in September. Does anyone have an
opinion on booking excursions through the cruise line (Royal Caribbean) vs.
making those arrangements ourselves? We would like to go on a whale
watching tour and a helicopter tour. Any input on which tours you enjoyed
and who you booked them with will be much appreciated.

Do all of them on your own. This is the best one for whale watching out
of Juneau:

try to go independent. less money, more time on the excursion, less people
etc.
we've done whale watching with captain larry in juneau (orca enterprises)
and we're doing it again Aug.

The whtiepass railway should be booked thru the cruiseline, price is
virtually identical.

I'll third Orca/Capt. Larry for whale watching in Juneau. We loved it.

Coastal did a great job on the helicopter glacier/dog sled tour too, also in
Juneau.

The train in Skagway was nice, although a bit of a letdown after Juneau. We
did the train up, and the motorcoach with a stop in Liarsville back down. I'm
not sure that it was worth the extra money to do the Liarsville part, but the
kids enjoyed panning for gold.

In Ketchican, we opted for the local trolley over the cruise tours of the
town/totem poles. I much preferred being escorted by a local than by people
who are only there for the season, but, of course, I've not done the other
tours, so maybe they are quite nice as well.

Out of Juneau is superior for McKinley vieiwng in my opinion. McKinley is
better for flights- summit- over the top in my experience.
