Default New camp @ Addo

THE Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape is opening the
Matyholweni Rest Camp in August. The camp is the second
accommodation development in the park and is located in a secluded area
of the Addo bush, near Colchester.
The local community has been involved in the camp’s development and
will receive a share of turnover from the accommodation.
The camp can also caters for disabled visitors with specially-adapted
accommodation units and a short interpretative trail.
The Addo Elephant Park most recently acquired land in its north-western
block around Lake Darlington and has introduced
buffalo and black wildebeest to existing herds of springbok and
gemsbok. It is planned to introduce cheetah and wild dog, once the
fencing around the area has been completed.

It is interesting to see what is happening at Addo. When we visited there
about seven years ago it was not very large, and much of it was obviously
reclaimed farm land. The main attraction was the most southerly remaining
population of elephant although we saw several other species such as
hartebeest.

The park has apparently now been extended to the coast and expanded in other
directions as well. Apparently they are going to have the "big seven",
being the usual African big five plus sharks and whales.

I hope local people will keep us updated on improvements at Addo because it
is becoming much more of an attraction.

When I was there a year ago now, the extension to the coast was only
really in name, rather than in any sort of reality.

Jim.
