Hi,
We are going to a trip to Belgium and Netherland and carrying
travellers cheques. Wondering, what is commission free option to
encash them in Brussels or Amsterdam and in smaller towns like Antwerp?

The best way to use them is at the supermarket at home and use an ATM
card to get cash in Belgium

Agreed! But first make sure your ATM card will WORK in Belgian
machines. Last time I was in Brussels, mine would not - the only way I
could get cash was with advances on my credit cards. (NOT the most
economical option, but I had no choice.)

Umm, it might be that you were trying to use the card at a bank that
only takes its own cards. I was very surpised in Bruges to find out the
hard way just how many Belgian banks are not part of the main credit
card interbank group (the name escapes me right now).

Forget travellers cheques. This must be one of the most FAQs in the
group, and the answer is always the same.

How can you make sure in advance? Asking your own Bank won't help.

That's true, so I'm not quite sure how you can be sure. If
your card shows a Visa or Mastercard logo, I think you're
safe - mine did not. (I had never had a problem on previous
visits - using the same card - so if some machines are for
locals only, as d.g.s. says, perhaps I just chose the wrong
ones to approach.)

I too have had my Debit card refused by ATMs in Belgium, despite the cards
having Both Visa and LINK logos. I never managed to work out why and did
eventually find Bank machines which consented to dispense money.
