Advice on driving to Spain.
I'm going to be driving to Spain in late December, stopping at Benidorm
to visit relatives, then a few days visiting friends in Grenada. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a route as i'm a little concerned that there may be snow on the roads (motorways) through the pyrenees, and thought that maybe someone could suggest an alternative route, or maybe someone has travelled the route in winter. Thanks in advance. |

I would guess that the Eastern costal route is kept clear, if indeed it even gets any snow. tim |

I would have thought the roads would be kept clear, but have no way of
knowing for certain, as for if it gets snow, i can tell you that early January . tim (not at home) wrote: "Peter" wrote in message ... I reckon you will be OK on main roads. Take chains? -- Mike Remove clothing to email |

Thanks in advance. I think it hardly rains in Andalusia..It should be OK in GRENADA but if you rent a car ask for chains.. if they think it is necessary ( I hardly think there is snow in Spain.. ) |

From the UK? Get the Plymouth-Santander or Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry, then you avoid the pyrenees. -- Andy |

From the UK? Get the Plymouth-Santander or Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry, then you avoid the pyrenees. What's the point? Better fly between the UK and Southern Spain and rent a car there. Perhaps the only drawback might be the excess of luggage onboard. On the other hand a bit of extra money will settle that potential problem. You would save time considerably. And time is money. Only if you want to see things enroute, then driving from Britain is reasonable (or you draw a motorhome). Renting a car in Spain is cheap (particularly in winter). I would say that for economy cars the rent start from about ten pounds a day (gasoline is also rather cheap in Spain, by Western European standards that is). The car is also adjusted for local conditions. The driver doesn't sit on right which is wrong but on left which is right. If one is a pansy, he/she can assemble a rack on the roof and load it by winter tyres. Or give the car a ride on a car pulled by a French or Spanish engine. Both pieces of advice are laughable for most people, I know. |

A couple of Christmases back, when my swimming pool (1/2 hour from the Med) had 2cms of ice on it, there were no problems with snow blocking any of the roads in southern France, even minor roads up in the mountains, or on any of the roads up into Andorra. Unlike Britain, where snow always seems to take us by surprise, the snow ploughs are out as soon as they are needed, which is not very often if you follow the A9 from France into Spain.
