Driving DC to Chicago - need advice!
My wife and I are planning to visit Washington DC, before we head over
to Chicago for a wedding. We are coming over from England, but my wife is a US citizen. We are considering driving between the two, to see a little bit of the country. - Any ideas of nice places to visit between DC and Chicago? - What are the roads like? Should we allow more than say 2 days? - Perhaps you have an idea of a good route to take? Thanks for any thoughts. Tim |

If you're travelling in winter road conditions will be hit and miss... |

Should we allow more than say 2 days? Are you planning on taking interstates? Except for Pennsylvania, the Interstates are in pretty good shape. Secondary roads are more difficult, and vary widely. You'd need a route and local konwledge to know. - Perhaps you have an idea of a good route to take? Only partly. Unless you have a good reason to do so (And Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater would be a good reason). I'd avoid PA, since the Interstate is in bad shape there. That said, they are doing and have done significant work on it, so parts are just beautiful. Julie Only Partly. Two days should be ample, barring severe weather. Best route, IMHO, is...
I-270 out of DC to Frederick, MD I-70 west to Hancock, Md I-68 west to Morgantown, WV (this route avoids the worst part of I-70 (Pennsy Pike) in PA, and is in good repair) I-79 north to Washington, PA (just south of Pittsburgh I-70 west to Indianapolis, IN (use southern circumferential around Columbus, OH, which might be a decent stopping place) I-65 north to I-90 west into Chicago "Tim" wrote in message oups.com... Bear in mind that it is in winter and you are going to have to drive around or through a set mountains, and there is a snow belt near the Great Lakes. There is lots of nice country to see on the way, but if you hit a severe snow storm it could really slow you down. |
