Can I drive to Doubtful Sound and don't join the local tour?

The trip to Doubtful Sound takes a full day, so I suggest you stay at Te Anau or Manapouri unless you feel like more travelling in the morning and evening. Te Anau is a nice place to stay and cheaper than Queenstown.
