Yeah, it looks like Megabus added a Hartford stop on some of their
Boston-New York runs. The extra stop adds 10 minutes to the
theoretical schedule -- who knows how long it actually takes. This is
good to know if you were expecting an express trip.

Their pricing algorithm occasionally sells Boston-New York tickets
cheaper than Boston-Hartford, so you could save money by getting a
full-length ticket and getting off the bus early.

Lucky Star Bus sells tickets to and from their rest stop in Vernon,
CT, outside Hartford.

That's interesting -- where does Lucky Star stop these days, and is it
a consistent location? Ever since the Century Buffet closed down*
I've had stops at the Roy Rogers in Manchester and the Burger King at
Exit 64 in Vernon. Unless, of course, I'm mistaken and one of those
was Fung Wah, but LS is my default so I assume it was them.

* How a restaurant with busloads of customers delivered to its door
fails is beyond me, unless a) it was so bad that even a captive
audience wouldn't eat there, or b) whatever deal they had cut with
Lucky Star fell through and their lifeline went away. I just miss
having the adjacent Big Y where I could at least get something
reasonably healthy and/or cheap to eat.

Lucky Star stops at the Burger King in Vernon, which has big signs on
the doors advertising the Vernon bus service. It looks like their
website will sell you a ticket to or from Vernon on any trip except
Friday and Sunday afternoons (the busiest times of the week). This
makes it easier for them to make sure passengers boarding there get a
seat, but it's not convenient for weekend travellers.

Fung Wah usually stops at the rest area on I-95 in Milford.

I was mistaken -- Lucky Star stops at the Burger King at exit 67 in
Rockville.

Lucky Star and Fung Wah now both have ticket counters in the South
Station Bus Terminal. I liked the previous setup where they sold the
tickets right at the gate -- you could see if the bus was there and
how long the line was before you chose which company's ticket to buy.

In New York, Fung Wah's buses now load on Chrystie Street, right
behind Lucky Star's spot. Fung Wah's ticket booth remains at the
corner of Canal and the Bowery, in the Buddhist temple building. I
hope the city isn't giving them trouble.

There was an accident at the Canal/Bowery load-spot last year
involving a dump truck careening into a Fung Wah bus. There was a
fatality. So relocation might have been due to safety concerns.

Well, Chrystie Street is also at the bottom of an off-ramp from the
bridge. (That's what makes both locations so convenient -- there's
almost no city streets between the highway and the bus stop.) And if
an out-of-control truck barrels onto Manhattan streets, there's going
to be an accident whether a bus is parked in its path or not.

There was a similar article in Money Magazine. There's
"http://boltbus.com" and "http://megabus.com" and
"http://www.xedohoang.com/english.html".

I guess we'll all be back on buses soon with the airlines cutting back
so much on flights and raising prices.

Rockville and Vernon are actually collectively the town of Vernon-
Rockville, so technically you're correct either way, but yeah, that's
not the one I meant.

Driving past on Wednesday evening I saw that the tall sign for the
Roy's in Manchester is gone, and the restaurant was dark. The latter
could have been just for the holiday, but it got me wondering if they
just went under. It's never very busy unless the bus is there, and
it's always a mess after the bus leaves (and infrequently cleaned
up).

The North Haven Roy's couldn't live on Fung Wah alone. I wonder if
the same holds true for the Manchester one.

Well, http://www.royrogersrestaurants.com has a store locator which
still lists the Manchester one, and also says a Roy's is *opening*
this month at a truck stop along I-95 in North Stonington (near the RI
border).

The chain is barely hanging on. Most of its locations are in toll
road service plazas -- maybe they have contracts that don't allow them
to close or rebrand them.
