Tom Mix was born in Pennsylvania, and William S Hart in Newburgh, New York...big
early "western" movie stars....

Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok and Bat Masterson were all born in Illinois...Billy
the Kid was born in New York City....

Guess everything is "the West" to somebody....r

Duh. For obvious reasons, most people living in the Old West came
from the present day East.

For Americans, The West west was always out at the frontier, the
limits of settlement.

I understand that the current WAC is something different. My memory is
that the formal name for the Big 10 was WAC back a century or so ago.

The short history of the Big Ten at

http://bigten.collegesports.com/trads/big10-trads.html

refers to the "Western Conference" as an alternate name for what was
founded in 1895 as the "Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty
Representatives," which started out with seven members, not ten.

Note also that the U of Michigan's fight song contains the following line:
"Hail, hail to Michigan, the champions of the West!"

True enough, though you'll quickly blow the savings trying to get a decent
hot dog, sausage, or an edible slice of pizza.
