That's right, Sochi - on the Black Sea, where :-

"The resort has a warm climate, averaging +7 °C (44.6 °F) in January and
February, and boasts many sanatoria and mineral baths. There are also tea
plantations, the most northerly in Europe. Sochi attracts vacation-goers
with its subtropical vegetation, numerous parks, monuments, and extravagant
Stalinist architecture".

Have I missed something here?
Has the IOC missed something here?

In the resort itself, on the Black Sea, it is +7 C in January, but up
in the mountains nearby it is much colder - the article says the
mountain venues are 49 km away from the resort.

They ski up in the mountains. Just like Vancouver, they don't ski in
Vancouver, but up in Whistler.

Apparently, the IOC were also very impressed with Putin's (rather good)
English!

It's nearer to permanent snow (in the Caucasus) than almost any other
city of comparable size in the world.

Has the IOC missed something here?

Maybe that its transport links are crap and it's next door to Europe's
longest-running war of independence (in Abkhazia). But I suppose just
about nobody but TV crews watches the Winter Olympics anyway.

The Summer Olympics' ratings have also declined a lot over the last
few years. With so much sport on TV and satellite 24-7, the Olympics
are not a big deal anymore, and a lot fewer people are interested in
traveling to see them or watching them on TV. Hence the push to
introduce sports like snowboarding that people actually care about.

And there's been a lot of pressure to increase the number of major
world sporting events held outside of North America and Western
Europe. After South Africa lost the 2006 World Cup bid to Germany,
the soccer association committed to a rotation between continents, and
South Africa will host the 2010 World Cup. Formula-1 now has races in
China, Turkey, Bahrain and Malaysia.
