Interpol Identifies Suspected Pedophile

PARIS (AP) - A suspected pedophile sought in a worldwide Interpol
manhunt has been identified and is believed to be in Thailand, the
international police organization said Monday.

The man was allegedly shown sexually abusing 12 young Vietnamese and
Cambodian boys, apparently ranging in age from 6 to early teens, in
about 200 photographs posted on the Internet. The man's face was
disguised in the photos as a digitalized whirl.

Using techniques that neither they nor Interpol would discuss, German
police recreated an image of the man's face and released four
reconstructed photos of him last week.

Interpol said more than 350 people then supplied tips to authorities
worldwide, leading them to identify the man as an English teacher who
worked at a school in South Korea.

Interpol said it now knows the suspect's name, nationality, date of
birth and passport number, but it did not release that information in
its statement. It said the man flew from Seoul, South Korea, to
Bangkok, Thailand, last Thursday, with security cameras documenting
his arrival at Thai immigration. Interpol again appealed for public
help to track him down now.

"Thailand is at the center of an international manhunt, and
authorities in the country, in co-operation with Interpol and police
around the world, are hunting him down," Interpol's secretary general,
Ronald K. Noble, said in a statement.

This was on the news last week and put back on again tonight.
You will find that pressure is put on software manufacturers to provide
backdoors and extra options in programs. The way they did it was to put a
photo in to an art package and create the swirl effect. Next the file was
replaced with one on the internet and "undone". All they had to do was make
sure the swirl centre was in the same point on the photo.
Simple as that. I bet he is running already. The only way he could have
stopped that happening was to use a felt pen and black out his face, then
take a new photo. Anything digitised can be undone quite easily. As
technology advances more people are caught.

=============================================

Not sure the felt pen method works today.
To be safe, they'd have to cut the face out of a paper photo and then
reintroduce it to the web.

No it can't! Just use the photoshop smudge(?) tool with the mouse, and
so much information is lost they'll never get it back. Even better,
just use a black square.

This guy was clearly an idiot. A sick idiot.

No it cannot. *Most* digital effects cannot be reversed given only
the resulting image. The "undo" button in a graphic editing program
will only work for the image you are currently editing, because the
software saves backups (in one form or another) of the image prior to
making changes. The way you describe the image was reconstructed
would not work.

Distorting effects such as swirls, ripples, fish-eye and even some
types of blurring can be effectively undone given only the image by
reversing the algorithm that created it, because those effects consist
mainly of repositioning pixels rather than replacing pixels (though
some pixel loss will usually occur).

If you digitally black out or pixellate part of a photograph it is not
possible to recover the original information because the algorithms
for such effects are strictly one-way (e.g. if you change all the
pixels in an area with pixels of the same colour there is no way to
know what the original pixels were - the original pixels have been
replaced, not moved or altered).

It was on the news last week because they wanted to know who he was.

It was back in the news because they know who he is and is in Thailand
flyig in from Korea

I cant believe the process will be as simple as reversing or un-doing
the swirl as pixels will have been lost and replaced in the swirl
process. Quite a lot of interpolation will have also been required

All he needed to use, to avoid detection, was another fillt,r one
that destroyed more pixels rather than re-arranging many of them.

Its not easy to undo digitised processes once the data has gone
It would still be in a *.psd file but not in a *.jpg for example
I am sure no *.psd was posted
