The Glenn Miller Orchestra . . .
. . . with musical director Larry O'Brien, performed this evening
aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, a museum. Here's the Special Events page, at the site at Left in the sig, entry http://geocities.com/dancefest/Specials.html *** Saturday, March 24; 8-12: $55 THE GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA http://www.glennmillerorchestra.com/ plays for dancing aboard the USS Hornet http://www.uss-hornet.org/dance/index.html docked at Pier 3, Alameda Point. Tickets in advance $45 at 1510/521-8448x282 from 10-4: reserved near floor, $85; reserved near stage, $125. Class with ??? at 8. Answers? *** Every Third Sunday, the Rudy Salvini Orchestra plays. On the Special Events page is the comment that "This band's been together so long that it's near perfect, swings nicely, and has some of the best soloists you'll ever hear." Very few, very short, solos were played by the Glenn Miller Orchestra. That's a good thing as none of the numbers was too long for comfortable dancing. But the rest of the description is applicable. This band is also a near-perfect swingin' marvel, just as good for non-dance listening as it is for dancing. And they do some very fun choreographed stuff. The book is enormous! It includes more than six hundred numbers, might be a foot thick and weigh twenty pounds. Ain't never seen nuttin' like it! Obviously such a big book includes hundreds of numbers written long after Glenn died so it's not limited to his book. Of course some numbers, made popular by Glenn, we all know and love were played by the sixteen musicians with the standard 5/4/4/3 configuration. Sometimes Larry played trombone, both ensemble and solo. But so was much else. The band is strong; a powerhouse of fine musicians. And tight! Larry has, in twenty-five years of leadership, made it what it is. He's reputed to be a very nice guy, personally, but a strict disciplinarian when it comes to the music -- the music, it's all about the music -- not unlike James Brown, who's not reluctant to fire a sub-par performer. It shows! The Hornet has been bringing us name bands for many years. Most have been merely OK. A few have been awful. None has ever been as good as this! Don't ever pass up a chance to hear this great band. It's all that you might expect and likely to even surpass your expectations. Larry, musicians: ¡BRAVO! In addition to the band, there were some vocalists that were also excellent. In recent years, the USS Hornet museum has had some financial troubles. This evening's attendance set a record. Although I don't know how many were there, the previous attendance record was around fifteen hundred. -- __________________________________________________ ______________ A dancing San Franciscan who sometimes just listens. http://geocities.com/dancefest/ --- http://geocities.com/iconoc/ ICQ: http://wwp.mirabilis.com/19098103 ------- IClast at Gmail com -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |
