Default New Jersey Get Together - Planning Stages

On 2/18/06 10:44 AM Bill consulted a Magic 8 Ball and declared:
I'm an equal opportunity lousy gambler -- I can lose money at any venue --
trotters; flats, dog races; casinos---- just would be fun to get together

It's amazing how crowded Ferry Street is in the middle of the week -- we
went recently to Fornos on, I think, a Wednesday night -- that place, and
the area around it, was really crowded -- in talking to the bar tender
prior to dinner, he said that the weekends are nearly
impossible --- -i.e. from a security point of view, not much risk -- the
bad guys hate a lot of people around -- I'd love to get together and
finally meet many of the people I've "talked to" over the years ---
there's no reason that Newark wouldn't work, but if people are
reluctant., would the Meadowlands be better?? Pegasus or Terraces
restaurants?

I could go for that... but prefer thoroughbred season, not the trotters.

--Tom

The food at Pegasus in the Meadowlands is over priced and lousy. I'd
like to suggest maybe a weekday at Iberia Tavern on Ferry Street. I
know for folks who work it could be hard to get away for a weekday.
But, the Lunch menu at Iberia Tavern has a 1 1/2 lb. Lobster special.
If I recall, it's $12.00 steamed, $14.00 broiled with crab meat. For
this price it is served on a platter surrounded by potatoes pan fried
with garlic, vegetables. If this isn't doable, I am open to any of the
other Portuguese restaurants in the Ferry Street area.

In my town of Cranford is a good Spanish restaurant, Cervantes of
Spain. They make a good Paella and also have a Tapas bar. Cranford is
reachable via, Garden State Parkway, NJ Transit Bus from Elizabeth or
Plainfield / Dunellen line or NJ Transit trains from New York/Newark.
Entrees range from $15.00 - $24.00 at dinner, less at lunch with Tapas
in the $6.00 range.

Lunch during the week wouldn't be doable for me and Kevin. He doesn't
have all that much vacation and it has to be saved for cruising or
other trips.

Wherever you guys go for lunch in Newark, post a few pictures of the area. I
used to work across the street from Penn station & it would bring back a lot
of fond memories. I can smell the paella now.
Thanks

I another post, Sheree brought up the idea of a get together at one of the
Portuguese restaurants in Newark. It's kind of taking shape via e-mails.

Looks like a Saturday, either late afternoon or evening. April 1 or April
8 seem to be a good time frame (after that we have Easter and Passover
coming up).

I've never been to any of the Portages Restaurants in Newark, but they are
rather famous for great food at very reasonable prices. They may be
within walking distance of the train station there... though we can work
on travel plans later.

Any interest?

I agree that the Pegasus Restaurant(both East & West) at the Meadowlands is
not my cup of tea either -- when we're at the track, we eat at their
Terraces Restaurant. As the name implies, it's a terraced Restaurant, on the
finish line -- It serves a variety of food, and I think they require a $25
minimun -- kind of neat because there's only one seating -- you have the
table from about 6:30 to the last race -- Not trying to "sell" the location,
but a place where you many want to try sometime other time--
As to time, like many, I work, so only an evening get together would be
doable -- as to when or where, I'm totally flexible

Tom,

Go to Forno's Of Spain Restaurant (47 Ferry St., Newark; Tel:
973-589-4767). Its top notch and a reasonably short walk from Penn
Station.

Is that the place with paella pans that are the same size as the tables?

Yes, their portions are HUGE!

Welcome home!

Sounds good to me, but still don't know if we will be able to make it.
I hate these constantly changing business trips(grin).

Does Iberia have its own parking lot?

There are several places in the Ironbound Area on Ferry St. that are
wonderful. Also, you might want to consider Don Pepe's -- depending on
the number of people interested, you might be able to get a private
room and a special party rate. I have done a number of parties there. I
used to work across the street in the office building connected to the
Seton Hall Law School. Don Pepe's has a large parking lot and is just
across the street from Penn Station.

You also want to reconsider Pegasus -- I had been down on it. In
October, my professional association had its annual meeting in
Secaucus. We had dinner at Pegasus and I was pleasantly surprised. It
is buffet style. Some people may prefer being served.

Of course, nothing can beat the quantity and the low price of the
restuarants in the Ironbound. It is a safe neighborhood. It is always
busy on Ferry Street night or day.

I would be interested in joining when the plans are confirmed.

don pepe's can be large and too "commercial". it is good food as they all
are.

so far iberia seems to be the favorite. i think we were looking at the
weekend of apr 8,9.

how about a vote?!! sat or sun preferred? probably around 1-2pm so we can
use the lunch menu
