Baltic countries air carriers
I am planning a trip from the Pacific Northwest to Tallinn, Estonia and am
having trouble finding connecting European flights from the main European gateway airports; I could use some advise from seasoned travellers in that region. Martin |

The main gateways are through Helsinki, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Copenhagen. There are also flights to London (Gatwick and Stansted) and summer flights to Paris. Here is a link to the winter timetable for the airport for more info on destinations and frequencies, plus a general link to the airport web site: http://www.tallinn-airport.ee/public...uplaan-eng.pdf http://www.tallinn-airport.ee/index.php?page=409 An alternative is to fly into Helsinki, and take a 1h45m jet ferry or 20 minute helicopter flight for the short hop to Tallinn. Be careful making reservations on weekends, since Tallinn is a popular destination for Finns. http://www.portoftallinn.com/passeng...schedule.shtml http://www-eng.njl.fi/ http://www.tallink.fi/en/index.html http://www.copterline.com/en_GB/ Note there is also an overnight ferry from Stockholm. Here's a general link to transportation services in the region: http://www.balticsww.com/timetables.htm |

SEA to AMS on NWA 34; change planes, AMS to TLL on NWA 8805 (aka KLM 1327). On the way back, TLL to AMS, but the plane change requires an overnight stay in Amsterdam, then AMS to SEA. A bit more convenient is SAS from SEA to CPH, change planes, then SAS/Estonian codeshare from CPH to TLL. That's just from SEA, since there's more to "the Pacific Northwest" than Seattle, and you don't indicate whether PDX or YVR would also be convenient. -- dgs |

Martin,
Easyjet (easyjet.com) is one of the biggest European Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs) and flies to Tallinn from London Stansted and Berlin. Stansted is London's 3rd airport and is, frankly, a pain in the butt to get to. However, if you book plenty of time in advance, and stick to your plans, you can pick up a real bargain in terms of flight tickets. Things to look out for are that mid-week flights are often much cheaper on Easyjet than at the weekend, (try their Calendar View), and that taxes and charges can add quite a bit to the total bill. Prices also increase with time, so booking early is very beneficial. Also look into getting to Stansted from Central London (or even LGW or LHR) by coach (www.nationalexpress.com). It's slower than the Stansted "Express" train but a lot less expensive. Hope this helps Russ |
