Default Jo-Burg, Capetown, Namibia questions

I'll be in Jo-burg for a few days, 1) Can I drink the water, eat
salads, without concern. I'll be at one of the northern resorts and
also at a barbie over an associate's house. 2) Same question for Cape
Town (Staying at a hotel). Thirdly, Can I just fly up/drive up to
Namibia for a couple days? Does an American citizen need shots? Visa?

The water in South Africa is of very good quality and you can drink it.
In fact the water quality from the taps is probable better than in most
of America.

For Johannesburg, Cape Town you donīt need any shots. Only if you go
into the malaria areas (e.g. Kruger), you will need profylactic pills.

A Visum can be obtained at arrival. You will get a permit for the
duration of the stay. Maximum 3 months if I remember correct.

Sure you can drive or fly to Namibia for a couple of days. But remember
that distances are huge. So driving there from Cape Town is a long trip,
don't even think of driving all the way from Jo'burg. Don't know what
you would want to visit, but if you only have a couple of days, you
might spend most of that time in the car. So flying could be a better
option.

Regards,
Hans

No visa or shots for Namibia?

Not sure for US citizens. Most foreigners can just obtain the permit on
entering the country. Same as in SA. In the plane you'll get a little
piece of paper to fill out. That's it.

For the shot, again in depends on where and when you go. For the Namib
desert or the Fish River Canyon you won't need anything. But if you go
to Etosha in the wet season, you will need some malaria protection. Also
if you would go further north.

Shot against Hepatitis may not be necessary but could be advisable. Best
is to visit a travel clinic.

Regards,
Hans
