On that hill (where the new casino is opening very soon!) there is the
Sheraton Fallsview, the Marriott and also a Hilton. Are are really nice and
have great views.

Just make sure that you find the right hotel (I think all the chains have
multiple hotels in NF) and make sure you don't go to a 'fallsview' hotel and
then get a room looking at the city.

Most of them have packages too that include breakfasts and dinner. Kids
might like the Hilton a bit more because it has the nicest pool with a fun
waterslide.

You don't want to just sit in your hotel looking at the falls. You
want to turn off the lights and get in the jacuzzi with your beloved
and fool around a bit or at least do some smoochin' and watch the lit-
up falls.

Actually, I found the lit-up falls to be a bit cheesy, but my daughter loved
them. I wanted the view because the room had a large, comfy chair and the
window had a vent underneath to hear the roar. I have never been to the
falls before, may never get there again, and I spent the hour before dawn
tucked into the chair watching the sun come up with that beautiful view.
Worth every penny.

The view from your hotel room is more or less like watching the falls
on a video.

Because you have to go to bed sometime. Yes, it is a shame they were
constructed, but they are there and the view from the rooms are fantastic.

While I count myself among those who recent the erection of tall buildings so
close to one of the great natural wonders of the world, I have to admit that
they are not entirely intrusive. If you are walking or driving along the
parkway you are more likely to be looking at the falls that at the buildings
on the top of the hill behind it, though I am sure they mar the view from the
American side.

If you're on the American side, you can't miss them. My Italian
husband and I were there last summer and he was horrified that Canada
had allowed such monstrosities to be built so close to the falls. He
said that it was worse than the worst abusive construction he had ever
seen in Italy, and that's saying something. He refused to spend a dime
in Canada in protest.

It is a shame that they located the new casino right next to
those hotels. I am sure it will mean lots more business for the hotels, but it
seems such a waste of valuable tourism real estate. The serious gamblers would
be just as happy to have gone a mile or two down the road.

I think Ontario needs to have a good ecological re-education program
for it's urban planners or whatever they're called. Are they totally
in the pockets of big business?

That probably is not what Oscar Wilde had in mind, following his
visit from England, when he said that Niagra Falls, honeymoon
destination that it is, surely must be the American bride's second
greatest disappointment.

It's not Canada. The federal government doesn't often get involved in municipal
zoning and building codes. It is the city of Niagara Falls that has allowed it to
happen. It's interesting that your Italian husband is so offended by it, since
the locals consider the Italian family factor to have had a lot of influence :-)

Thanks to all who posted on which hotel and what to do in the hotel
room.
Just wondering - if you can hear the roar of the falls, is it possible
to get any sleep?

It could sound as if you left thousands of water taps running!

We were at the Marriott Fallsview, on the 8th floor. The row of hotels is
on a bluff above the parkway that is immediately adjacent to the water, so
there is quite a height difference. The sound is nowhere near loud enough to
drown conversation, it's just a pleasant background. Besides, the vents
were there to be open or closed, as you prefer. Enjoy your visit, and be
sure to go the Niagara Parks website and get the Great Gorge Adventure
Pass - discount pass to the Journey Behind the Falls, the Whitewater Walk,
the Maid of the Mist and the Butterfly Conservatory as well as a one-day
pass on the shuttle; plus shorter lines.

All the more reason why my husband would find it offensive. There is
little of that kind of thing in the part of Italy where I live. The
national government protects certain scenic zones as part of the
national heritage, but allows the details of the zoning to local
administrations. There have been some celebrated cases of corrupt
local governments turning a blind eye to vacation villas and even a
few hotels built in protected scenic zones. The national government
has in a number of cases required that completed buildings (including
at least one large hotel) be torn down, although they haven't been
tough enough to suit most Italians.

In any case, my husband says he's never seen anything in Italy as
egregious as the hotels overlooking Niagara Falls.

I think Ontario needs to have a good ecological re-education program
for it's urban planners or whatever they're called. Are they totally

You know, I find that "iffa" offensive.
