Skip:

They already do stop at Cuba, the Sundream comes to mind as one of those
that stops there.

I know lots of people who have cruised to Cuba or taken a land holiday
there.

When one visits Vancouver and walks around Canada Place there are a
number of Cuban Cigar Stores. Cuban trade is very much alive on this
side of the border.

No & no. Why on earth would anyone want to go to Cuba in the first
place? All one needs to do is go to Miami & Miami Beach. Here you will
find the very best the Cuban people have to offer. And the very worst.
We no longer live in South Florida as we had great difficulty with
everyday life due to not speaking the local language. Moved to Tampa 18
years ago.

Exactly. No Americasn tourist can go to Cuba unless he wants to
engage in a fast :-) . . . or unless he goes with a chaperoned group
sponsored by a country such as Canada. The ship Valtur Prima (the
former STOCKHOLM of ANDRIA DORIA sinking fame) was doing trips to Cuba
from Jamaica for American tourists for years. There have also been
escorted weekends from Cancun to Havana for years, as well.

Where there's a will there's a way.

Yes, but a cruise means paying port taxes, those port taxes to Cuba would,

They would not be able to leave from American Ports. So you'd have to have
cruises embarking from Cancun or Cozumel, or other ports in the Caribbean to
do so.

Since most cruise ships aren't American flagged there probably isn't a

news As much as I wouldn't like to see Fidel Castro get any money out of the
port
fees & think the people would benefit more from the cruise ships stopping
there. The average Cuban citizen doesn't get much from their "government"
&
at least the tourists would help generate some sort of an economic boost.

Yes and yes. Unfortunately there is a very large and politically powerful
group of Cubans that do not want American citizens to be able to do this so
until the politicians finally tell these clowns to take a hike don;t look
for it to happen. It certainly will not happen during an election year.

Exactly! It's Miami that's keeping Cuba under US sanctions, and no
one else.

Those people that sail on private boats to Cuba get a stamp from the
government stating that the cigars, rum, etc that they have, plus all food
and drink, were 'gifts' of the Cuban government and no money changed hands.
You rather expect Rick to tell you to go see the fat man to obtain the
papers....

Nah, the Cuban people in Cuba would feel an obligation to be nice to you,
and would most likely make an effort to speak English if you came into their
shops. They might even have signs printed in English! vbg

There is a difference between sending money to the oppressed versus to
the oppressor.

As if the money to the 'oppressed' isn't propping up the economy? Compared
to Haiti or Dom Rep, there are very few 'oppressed people in Cuba. And since
only those with relatives in the US get to receive money, that support the
system of alien smuggling, to which Florida and the federal government turn
a blind eye. So, again an irony, Cuba is listed as a nation that supports
terrorists, yet any Cuban who makes it to US shores, even if they attack and
assault border patrol officers on the way here, gets to stay. Cogitate on
that one.

It depends on the traveller. If you are on a "licensed" trip to Cuba you can
certainly spend money there. Several faculty from our university were there
this past year for a licensed conference. They spent money there.
