Naples is a poor (by Western European standards) and overcrowded city
with lots of crime, but it has its charms. It's not overcrowded with
tourists like Venice, Florence, and the historic center of Rome. Many
people consider Naples the most truly Italian city, and Italians from
cities like Milan even go there to see what Italy used to be like.
Naples has some interesting architecture, a notable museum of ancient
art, and has a beautiful setting on hills around a bay, plus great
pizza. And it's close to Pompeii and other ancient sites. I wouldn't
make it a first priority in Italy, but on a longer trip it is worth
seeing.
