Default unaccompanied minors fee...

I am blown away that it is $150 for a RT flight with a transfer. Seems
a bit excessive. This is the first time I have tried to book this sort
of ticket though - just wondering if the fee was always in place and
has it always been this high?

Depends on the airline. Mine (Continental) charges $75 each way for a
transfer; $50 for a nonstop. Honestly, that's not much more than
shipping an oversize piece of baggage, and requires much more manpower
and care.

Consider that the airline is taking responsibility for not losing your
child. They dedicate an employee to watching him during the whole
stopover at the hub, and if he misconnects and gets stuck at a hub
airport, they'll have to stay with them overnight at a hotel. It's a
big risk, and a big liability if something goes wrong. There's a whole
chain-of-custody paper trail to track the child. It's not simply a
rubber stamp to extort money out of you.

Look at it this way: $150 is far less than if you had a ticket to
accompany the child. Think of it as saving $400, not wasting $150.

I believe that it is around $30/each flight and it is not unreasonable for a
$60+ for a connection (as a connection is a lot more work for them).

Should you use the mailblocks package and expect a response from me,
you should preauthorize the dissensoftware.com domain.

I very rarely bother responding to challenge/response systems,
especially those from irresponsible companies.

On WN, there is no charge for a single flight, but I don't think they
handle connections. On AA, it is $60 each way, including connections.
Before 6/15/2005, AA charged varying rates, depending on destination or
connections. It used to be $40 for a domestic non stop, and $75 for a
domestic connection

It always cost this much, it's just that previously it was
charged at 50 cents pop on evrybody's fare, now only
those that want this service get to pick up the tab.

The fees have been instituted over the past few years as a way of recouping
the costs. When people demand the lowest possible fares, something has to
give. So if you need an extra service (i.e., unaccompanied minors, extra
luggage, curbside checkin, etc.), more and more you have to pay extra for
it.

And the $150 may be just your airline, not all charge the same.

Jeff
