Default SE California dessert - info please

Hi,

I plan to drive from Las Vegas to San Diego, at the end of January,
travelling on Rte 95, a portion of HIghway 40, and Rte 62 (via Essex, Amboy
and Twentynine Palms.

Any advise ? Any safety tips ?

I expect to leave Las Vegas around 7.30 am and arrive in San Diego in the
afternoon.

Thanks

That is a sweet drive. ;-)

I did that same drive two years ago in January and don't remember
anything dangerous. Just some undeveloped areas where you don't want to
run out of gas. But nothing serious. Should take you about 7 hours of
fairly easy driving if you go straight through.

But there is a lot to see along the route. We took a 2-day stop at
29-Palms and a visit to Joshua Tree Park and Palm Springs.

There is also a slight detour onto historic route 66 that takes you only
a little out of your way if you are interested.

Definitely. Expect lots of remote desert, tourist traps when you gas
up, and have a great time.

That's about how I'd put it, too. It's better to pay too much for gas
than to run out of it, and it might be 30 or 40 miles at times between
stations. Bring water and a camera.

Joshua Tree is fantastic, and so is Death Valley, which it sounds like
you'll be going through?

Take plenty of film. It's a lovely trip. Carrying water is advisable,
not critical. Fill the tank 'fore leaving 'Vegas.

Take the time to view the murals in Twentynine Palms and note the
octagonal restaurant.

Death Valley's the other way.
