Then you should not have boarded.

The days and hours leading up to boarding there were 3 storms lined up
one behind the other, all heading towards either the gulf or eastern
seaboard. Your instincts were serving you well. You chose to ignore
them. You had all the information you needed: weather reports;
satellite images on the internet and the news; and what the cruise
line was telling you. It was up to you to put all the information
together and make your own decision. Because once you board, you
implicitly give that authority to the captain of the ship.

Your post was inevitable. We get a similar one just about every year
by someone who does not educate themselves about the difference
between a land vacation and one at sea. Even if there were no
hurricanes at all you are not guaranteed a smooth ride or the port
calls in the proposed itinerary. You hope for it, but you can't demand
it.

Ultimately, what the cruise line told you was true. They don't and
didn't take any risks with your life or their several hundred million
dollar asset. That's why the ship was kept out at sea rather than
coming in to port. All because you were nervous about the unfamiliar
movements of the ship doesn't translate into being in any kind of
danger. If the captain felt the ship was in conditions that it
couldn't handle, he would have moved the ship further away.

Actually some of us hope for a cruise with lively seas rather than
calm! I actually envy you - it reminds me of the crossing I did on QE2
in the early 90's that was a day and half longer than expected due to
the severe weather we sailed through (including a rogue wave that
pushed the ship over and caused all sorts of fun).

If you had been at a land resort that was hit by the hurricane, you'd
have spent your days in a make-shift shelter, stranded for days
without power and probably water for a shower. I'll take a tossing
ship with improvised entertainment and menus over that any day.

As for the combination of Carnival, hurricanes and a ship full of
Elvis-es - that's got to be an outline for a cheesy episode of The
Love Boat.

My brain seems to have taken a holiday, so I can't remember the name. But is
this the ship that eventually sank? The crew and captain were the first to
evacuate. The captain's excuse was that he was required to help organize the
evacuation from land. Although he was later charged with some crime or
another because of his actions.

Most modern cruise ships aren't really "ships" in
the classic form; they are more like self powered
barges with a hotel built on top.
Certainly not the kind of vessel I would like to
be in when the seas are really, really rough.
The concept of a short "Elvis" cruise in hurricane
season must have been really attractive to a lot
of people.
When you take a cruise at this time of year in
that part of the world, you have a fair chance of
getting at least some weather related stuff.
I certainly hope this does not put anyone off of
cruising; just a bit of forethought is required -
that and pack your own seasickness meds because
the ship may just run out
Cheers,

wow what a ordeal!!!!

our trip was HORRIBLE. not worth the effort at all..we were stuck in
the hurrincae out at sea for 3 extra days so we didnt get to come back
to land until the 4th of sept.. No rain but lots of rocky waters and
panic... Had to stay at sea and wait it out and man that was so scary
for us all..panic was all over the ship and i did get lucky to get a
phone call out from the ship to my daughter to pass it out to the
family....many didnt get that..Lots were upset and our bags were already
taken down to the luggage area so we had no clothes unless we were self
embarking. Ship ran out of some food items and they stoped cleaning our
rooms a day before we ported..Had to ask for stuff if we wanted
something..mostly tried to keep the kids occupied from scaring them.
wow i was so ready..i cant do another cruise...i was hurting so bad..the
darn scooter was just too hard to manuver around the elevators that i
just ended up walking which caused me so much pain..i was miserable..the
elvis cruise didnt do what they said and we didnt get ****...cheap
cheap.. lots of empty promises...The people who went on the first elvis
cruise were so angry that they didnt do half of what they did the first
time..even Jerry Schilling who organized this whole thing acted dumb to
what happened...
many passengers were so upset with the whole outcome of the cruise
it self..Carnival did what they said but the cruise was mainly for the
ELVIS FANS...just totally disapointing to the max..
Will never go on another one of them thats for sure..
we didnt get off the ship until 8:30pm that 3rd night and not only
was that a pain but another set of 2,000 people were boarding at the
same time which made it a mess...their trip was being cut short to 3
days only instead of 4 cause of the lateness of the arrival of the
ship..
i was so mad and so was jim..no one mingled and it was dead
unless you were a drunk.. people didnt really come out like we
expected..most stayed in bars or came out only for the shows late late
at n ight..
The few shows we did see were good but they werent organized...they
forgot some of the shows that they were suppose to mingle with the
guests cause of bad organizing and canceled them for a later ttime which
never happened...some of the shows were stretched out for later times
also when we found out we were remaining at sea another 3 days..The
artists did a great job but as for the cordinator of the whole cruise it
was un just to us fans who paid good money to get nothing in return..
the ship rocked alot cause the
the huricane..man i was scared to death...i wanted to go home..
then i didnt get to go to new orleans cause that was closed
down..i did stop and meet my online friend for the first time at her
home for a few hours but that was a bummer..we didnt get to spend no
time at all..she had company and her electric was out and it was a big
wet mess there..some vacation huh?
had car trouble on the way
back and then stoped in houston tx. to get that fixed..it was one thing
after another.
we both are so disapointed about the
whole thing and wished we never even went..yea that bad..
spent all this money to only regret even
going..i was so mad and angry and sad and so was jim..
we had so much trouble finding hotels
cause they were all filled with people who evacuated and then the travel
time was double cause of the traffic...my god what else could go
wrong...???
im happy to be home but
my daughter did a lousy job at taking care of my animals..she finally
put my dylan into the boarding 3 days before i came home cause she was
busy moving which she told me she wasnt going to do till next week..oh
well that went out the window.
my paco is really sick from his stroke..his eyeball is
bad..think they will have to remove it..caused by the stroke he had
before we left..my daughter was to take care of him but she didnt..i
came home to find him outside all dirty and not able to walk..i was so
mad and sad at the same time..
i bathed him and cleaned up what i could.. then jim is
sick cause he was out of meds during the trip and i
cant get to the vet till he goes to the docs today and gets his meds..so
hopefully tomorrow.
we used up so much money and it wasnt even worth
leaving home..we both said that to each other last night..i am so bummed
about the whole thing..
No new orleans cause of the hurricane and then getting stuck
in it was no fun..i was scared to death..
then ran into so man little dramas that we
just wanted to be home..now hows that for a VACATION....
i dont even want to scrap book
this yet i know i need to .. i did keep a journal and its on a
day to day basis which im glad i
did...
hope all is well
with you and i sure did miss my emails..hahaha

PS....
Will never take a scooter on board a ship again..ended up walking
cause wheel chairs were taken..people didnt wait for you to get in and
out of the elevators and when i went to shows in my scooter people were
not allowing me to turn around to get out ...or back out..it was a mess
and i ended up putting my scooter in my room till i left the ship...i
would advise either a wheel chair or walker but nothing else...even the
little scooters were having trouble..this was my first experience with
this but i learned...
hugs....chatty cathy

I saw from Carnival's website during your cruise that Carnival Fantasy went
to Progreso instead of Cozumel because of the threat of Hurricane Gustav.
Wow, your entire itinerary has been changed (New Orleans-Cozumel-New Orleans
became Mobile-Progreso-Mobile)!

We evacuated to Robinsonville, MS (just south of Memphis) and stayed at
Sam's Town Casino for 3 nights, visited Graceland and I remarked about the
Elvis cruise advertisement banner. Later we ate at a Chinese super buffet
near Heartbreak Hotel (almost next to Private Presley) where the food was
much better and cost less than eating at Graceland.

Also, I've always packed a extra couple days of clothing every time I cruise
almost hoping just in case my cruise would get extended as lagniappe just
like what happened to yours!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagniappe

Some of my questions have been answered in your message if the ship carried
enough provisions. Obviously you faced food shortages.
Did the Carnival Capers have updated news and activites if your cruise get
diverted and/or extended? How do the dining rooms offer their dinner menus
for the extra days?

We had an RCI cruise where they ran out of food items and the cruise
was not extended for any days. It was a repositioning cruise, so was
longer than their normal cruise, but they do the same cruise every
year.
