Schelde reaches highest level in years

Tue 20/03/07 - The river Schelde is expected to reach its highest
level in years today. At storm tide, it is expected to rise 20
centimetres above the blue marking stone.
The river Schelde has its source in the North of France. It runs
through the Belgian provinces of Hainault and West and East Flanders
to Antwerp, after which it continues its course in westerly direction
before it discharges into the North Sea.
The river Schelde has made Antwerp into the important trading centre
it is today and still dominates the city's skyline.

Since the start of the storm tide on Sunday, the dam wall has been up.

Today, the river is expected to reach a height of 7.20 metres, which
is the highest level the river has reached in years.

According to Sven Lommaert of the Antwerp police, the river's critical
point is expected at 4pm this afternoon.

The police will decide in the hours to come whether the remaining cars
that are parked on the quays will have to be removed. On Tuesday
morning, there were still some 30 cars on the quays, most of them were
foreign.

The situation around the Antwerp quays will remain dangerous until
Wednesday.
