Hello was wondering if anyone has swam with the dolphins in Discovery
Cove? Is it a good experience and is it fun and worth it?

Thanks

Scott

We did this the year it opened and thought it was worth every penny spent!

We went on New Year's Day 2001 and loved it. It was relaxing and tranquil
and the interaction with the animals (not just the dolphins, either -
stingrays, fish, birds) was incredible. The lunch was good and the staff
very friendly and helpful - even gave us a free tasteof key lime pie since
we'd never tried it before. It was at Discovery Cove that I got over my fear
of birds. Their aviary is beautiful and the birds will come right down on to
your shoulder or hand to eat the food you are given for them.THe stingrays
are adorable (never thought I'd say that) and come and suck at your wet suit
for food.

And the beach is idyllic. We went in winter so it was rather cold, but it is
worth very penny in my opinion. The dolphin swim is indescribable. You get
to ride with these amazing creatures, learn the hand signals needed to
control them and watch them perform tricks while you learn about them.

If you want to knopw anything else, please email me privately. I'd be happy
to help in any way I can.

Hi Scott,

I've been to DC 5 times, twice with the dolphin swim. It's great!! Some
things you might want to know: Their toll-free number is 1-877-4
Discovery. You get 7 days free at Sea World or Busch Gardens, and for
an extra $30 you get 7 days at both of these parks.

On my web site the September 2003 Hint Of The Month is about Discovery
Cove. There is also a lot of free information and photos on the site.

ok, got another silly question. I know they hand out wetsuits to wear in the
water. But doesn't it get cold in the water in the wintertime? I planned a
trip for xmas, but am postponing until spring so it can be a little warmer
(and more enjoyable).

We were there in November on a gloomy, rainy day. We wore wetsuits and it
was actually warmer in the water than out of it.

Hi Eric,

Not a silly question at all. The wetsuit keeps you warm in the water - we
were there during the coldest winter in a hundred years (December 2000/
January 2001) and still had an incredible time. Out of the water, though, I
must admit it was freezing. We put on coats over our wetsuits and that
helped a little. We're going at exactly the same time again this year, so we
know what to expect.

I'm booked for DC for Dec. 8th with my dd and we're both doing the
dolphin swim. I'll post a trip report on our return. I've done a few
preps before our trip....
1- I purchased a few disposable underwater cameras
2- when I go to open swim at the ymca with my dd she practices with
her snorkel
3- and because she's missing school, if you go to DC website you
can get a complete list of animals there. She's now trying to learn
to recognize several of the tropical fish that she'll be swimming
with.

Can't wait to go!!!!

When you do your actual dolphin swim, you won't be allowed to take pictures.
They will have a photographer in the water taking photos of everyone in your
pod so you will have a selection to choose from afterwards. I didn't have
any trouble taking my underwater camera into the other areas, but the
dolphin swim was definitely off limits (although you can take photos of
other people from a distance either well before or after your swim time).
