Chicago never nicknames in my mind.

You never heard of Chi-town (SHY-town") or the Windy City?

Heard of 'em, but they don't stick in my mind, and they're rarely used
in conversation. Sometimes in newspapers, etc., maybe in ads or business
names. I'm sure they have nicknames for us in Madtown* or Naptown.

I've used this, but I much prefer Herb Caen's word: Lozangeles. He also
sometimes referred to his beloved San Francisco as Ess Eff.

Baghdad by the Bay.

Around a hundred years ago, before the movie business moved in and gave it a
population boost, northern Californians referred to Los Angeles as "the Queen of
the Cow Counties"....r

[Geographical nicknames]

Can't think of any outside the US- or are they too dependent on language
to translate?

Too dependent on language, probably. I know quite some nicknames for
German places; most of them depend on words sounding or looking similar
to the place name. A few are originating from English words, like
"Hangover" for Hannover or "Fishtown" for Bremerhaven.

Hadn't heard that in my part of Central California, but I don't yet go
back the full hundred years. IIUC that monicker started in the mining
camps because most of the edible meat came up from Los Angeles--SF was
the source of most other non-local goods. Hides were also shipped to
the east from what is now Orange County.
