Costs in Myanmar
"Alfred Molon" ..
"Dieter Aa" Dieter says... We didn't meet any beggars in Myanmar last December. Not saying that there are none, just that we didn't see any. It may be a poor country but you are not confronted with poverty on the streets. Possibly most people have enough to live. Up to my knowledge, all people in Myamnar have enough FOOD to live. And, yes, there are beggars in Myanmar. I have seen at least 5 people begging for money last month (in KyengTong, Sittwe, also in Bago) Read my post. I didn't write that there are no beggars in Myanmar - just that we didn't see any. Alfred Molon OK, fair enough I was just stating that last month, I have _seen_ several. I also have _seen_ prisoners in uniform, working on the road. |

Costs in Myanmar
There were a couple of young Burmese kids that came up to me and asked
for change while in Mae Sai (Thailand), and as soon as I began speaking a bit of Burmese with them, other Burmese kids who were within ear-shot soon joined them. I didn't want to give them money, thinking that they may have been 'working' for an adult who makes them beg and then takes most of what they bring in. (I had seen a group of a dozen fairly young Akha hill tribe girls in native costume and wearing vendor baskets full of jewelry standing in a semi-circle and being given stern direction by an older Arabic-looking man in Chiang Mai, and came to the conclusion that the girls were part of his vendor girl 'stable'.) I ended up distributing my bag of beef jerky as widely as possible to the kids by tearing it into small squares, though sadly some of the kids had to walk away empty-handed, with one boy of about 4 or 5 years of age following me around for about 10 minutes and looking up at me with an extended hand and big brown eyes on the verge of tears. Lesson learned... I did encounter an adult begger in the form of a Burmese girl in her early- to mid- twenties at Paung Do Oo (sp?) Pagoda on Inle Lake. She ployed me with puppy dog eyes over brown thanaka-streaked cheeks, a comely smile, a slender out-stretched hand and a sob story in Burmese about how she has four hungry children at home and a husband that walked out on her because they always fought; I ended up sending her away with some Granola Bars for her kids. I guess I'm just a soft touch... USC |
