What's your biggest pet peeve when cruising?

They should have two lines - one for those that would like to have their picture taken, and one for those that would rather get going on whatever they've planned for their day in port, without delay! Lee Let face it if you saw two lines in the lobby waiting to get off the ship & one had 200 people in it & wasn't moving & the other was flowing along which one would you choose? They're going to try & make money at our expense no matter how long we have to wait. Believe me, I understand that this is all about making money for the cruise lines. That's obvious. However, do they really think I'm going to purchase a picture of myself looking none too happy, after being forced to wait on that ridiculously long photo line before being able to disembark? I don't mind much, when the photographers visit the individual tables in the dining room. Happy to smile for them then. It's hardly disruptive to my meal, I'm not trying to get somewhere so am more relaxed, I'm dressed nicer than how I dress for days in port - end result is a picture of a happy cruiser - a picture I'm more likely to purchase. I'm almost certainly NOT going to buy a picture for which I was imposed upon and thus unhappy to have posed for. Lee That reminds me about our last Princess cruise in Hawaii when the cruise staff controlling the tender line forced us to wait until all the tours had disembarked before we could board the tender. We had elite status & it was the first time we weren't allowed to blend in with the crowd. We didn't make a fuss at the time but I still have to get a clarification the issue. Perhaps the individual ship can change the policy to suit the situation based upon the number of people that have signed up for tours. |

I don't know anything about the lady's father. Her father wasn't there. AFAIK neither she nor her husband (who was with her) are on the forums. Although I suppose anything's possible. We didn't discuss that. She said that on this particular cruise she had been told that she could not bring the dog, and I don't remember the reason, although we did discuss the fact that he wasn't there. She said it was out of the ordinary because she's had her dog with her before. Possibly it was because it was a Christmas/repositioning cruise and the boat was chock full.. |

Actually theres a better solution, - grab the dirty towels, run back to your
cabin - throw them on the bathroom floor - and take an equivalent number of clean towels from your bathroom. When you get back from the beach - thow the new dirty towels on the floor and hide tomorrows clean one in a locked suitcase. This could screw up carnival's entire laundry process. Thank God we sail HAL. " By the way, Lee, there's also a more economical alternative. As we both know, the cabin steward keeps some track of the number of white guest towels, wash cloths and hand towels in the cabin bath, so you certainly can't take them to the pool or ashore. To refresh your supply at home, all you have to do is grab some of the soiled towels in the hampers the steward uses during the day, and stuff them into your suitcase. When going ashore, it's no big deal grabbing 3-4 soiled towels in the hallway and wrapping them around under your moo moo dress or Aloha shirt. Nobody notices and since you're going to be on the beach and getting them wet anyway, the already soiled and damp towels in the halllway are perfectly fine. |

"Ermalee" wrote in message . .. Why wouldn't this work on HAL? lol At least on the cruises we've been on they don't require a formal sign-out for pool towels. When we went to the blue lagoon in Iceland we found two extra towels laid out on our bed the night before. It's not it wouldn't work - for some reason it isn't necessary on HAL. |

What's your biggest pet peeve when cruising?

-hh wrote: I was serious when I said that my last cruise didn't have any of these annoyances. Of course, it was on a ("very") small ship line, Cruise West, where there is no pool, no casino, no bingo, etc, so no possibility of irritations from these sources. I believe you! We took a cruise, a few years back, on Glacier Bay Cruise Line (no longer in business). I believe their ships and on board ambiance were similar to what you experienced on Cruise West. I believe that I've heard that said about Glacier Bay. Hadn't heard that they went under (unfortunate). Loved the cruise, but even that one had its annoyances. The major one, for me, was that there was no public space to sit quietly, without company. The cabin was barely big enough for the bed, much less a chair. I was on the Spirit of Nantucket (will be the Spirit of Glacier Bay next year) and I found the top deck to be a quiet place to take a cappachino (free) and sit & read, etc. Granted, on a northerly cruise it could be chilly, but there was enough spots and moveable furniture that you could get out of any wind, which is usually 80% of any discomfort. Great views, so I learned quickly to always carry my dSLR with me too. And, the one lounge was always filled with people. I'd go there, with a book in hand, start to read, and within 5 minutes be involved in conversation - not that it's a bad thing, but I didn't love the forced socializing. Funny, I've not really noticed any 'obtrusiveness' in any of the small boat lounges that I've spent time in. Might have been just the clients you had that one week? Overall, it was a great cruise experience - as different from a mass market cruise as you can get - so different that I'd be hard pressed to even include that cruise in this discussion of biggest pet peeves on cruise ships. Agreed, although I think its worth pointing out to the "mass customers" that if they don't want to tolerate all of their peeves, the solution is to vote with their wallet and go get a different product. Of course, this won't happen for most of them, but this thread does illustrate (that with 150+ posts) that its not all la-la- happy-happy in the mass commodity land. Overall, what's really impressed me over the years with Cruise West is how well the company treats their employees. We had been on a Prince William Sound cruise several years ago and happened to have the weather lift at Columbia Glacier - not only did they alter the itinerary to allow the guests to re-photo the ice, but they stayed a bit longer, to give the entire crew rotating 15 minute breaks, because (in the words of the Captain): "it was by far, the best conditions we had seen here in a full year" and the crew deserved to experience it too. Consequently, EVERYONE onboard got the rare chance to see the sight. -hh |
